AA Pre-emptive Strike Against TWA; TPA-SJU

If this rumor about TWA flying n/s from TPA to SJU is true, beware, AA will add a 2nd n/s service on this route. This route becomes effective next year. Reservations can be made now for the 2nd flt.

AA is obviously doing everything it can in its power to get rid of the "red bug" plaguing Puerto Rico. Once again, this is another test that TWA is being challenged.....

Take care and have a nice day.

I love AA, but I am in favor of TWA this time, I desperately want TWA to survive, they were put under by a cheap deal and they should not have to go down because of it.

Although I hope TWA will also survive, they don't have a snowball's chance in He** of making the TPA-SJU route profitable. AA will do whatever is necessary to remain dominant. I agree, they will add a second daily flight if necessary.

I happen to think you suck HPA318. Im not trying to start a fight but there is no reason you need to disrespect an airline like that. I flew TWA today and once again that airline has served me better than ANY other major airline I have been on INCLUDING American.
Take care

I too want to see TWA survive and grow again. I also think that AA will "protect" its turf in SJU. ( flying to SJU next week on AA). However, AA needs to be careful about the DOJ and anti-competitive tactics. Final thought, the market in SJU is probably big enough for a few TWA flights to make money on and not hurt AA appreciably.

A few notes on the "Red Bug"

TWA and AA went head to head in FLL-SJU.... Guess what... TWA now has 3x daily while AA has gone from 3x daily (up from 2x daily when TWA added 1x daily) to 1 and 2x daily.

As for AA and TW in SJU. Frankly TWA is really holding their own. Turning TWA into a profitable station there was genius. They went from a token 1x daily STL-SJU and 3-4x daily JFK-SJU to now having 50% of AAs traffic and continuing to grow.

Look for more with MIA-SJU due to be loaded into the system very soon. 3x daily (And likely to grow significantly from here)

Al

PS TWA is again #1 ontime, #1 operational reliability and #1 cutomer service according to JD Powers.... I guess AA isn't cutting it according to the DOT and JD Powers... The Red Bug seems to be doing fine...

For those who dismiss TWA and claim that they will be out of business.. Remember TWA is in much better shape then 4-5 years ago and is likely to be around another 12 years..

Look for exciting news this week on TWA

All of this focus on SJU by TWA may result in gains throught the peak winter months, but can they make it through the lean late spring and summer seasons? Is TWA sacrificing yield to boost load factor? i.e. by bulking out their seats to cruise and tour operators? DL adds their seasonal SJU flight from CVG in December, that eats at TWA's feed from the midwest. SJU is not an ideal stepping stone to Latin America, there is poor local feed for such flights. Also, the island nations of the Carribean have paid for the operating costs of flights to AA, with a nominal amount of passengers on the flights necessary to make a profit. The Carribean fosters strong loads, but nominal yields for many airlines.

You have a good point there Exusair. The carribean destinations like SJU, have been notorious for low-yields. AA has been making it work pretty well for years there and somehow TWA is making it work now. It should also be noted, the Puerto Rican government has been subsidizing some of TWA's routes, such as STL-SJU and LAX-SJU. They'll probably do the same if TWA decides to make SJU a latin-american hub and start flights to South America. Puerto Rico has been calmoring for more South American service for years. The people of Puerto Rico want a choice other than AA, and TWA is filling that role nicely. Also note that TWA has gone toe-to-toe with AA in various markets out of SJU: JFK, BOS, FLL, MCO, and now TPA and MIA. They have yet to be turned back. I think this is a smart move on behalf of TWA.

I'm confident in TWA's progress.

Yes Puerto Rico's government has been assisting TW, expecially in SJU-LAX which is really in need of support, but TWA has been holding their own well. Go find a fare on Travelocity or Expedia, they're not cheap!

TW's load factors are very high, TW doesn't need help on that front. Your right to point out that it is yield TW needs to improve, yet by selling out an entire flight to the tour operators such as Turks & Caicos Express, GoGo Travel, and Travel Impressions, TWA guarantees a profit on all flights. Not a tremendous one, but right now TWA needs money and these flights help.

AirEuropa, TWA, America West, Kuwait Airways, Air Malta, and Royal Jordanian. What a Group!

If I'm not mistaken, SJU-TPA isn't subject to Karabu, meaning TWA might be able to do it very profitably. Keep in mind that TWA has done everything possible to reduce costs more than the competition. This is one of those routes where they might be able to kick some tail.

GO RED BUG GO!

Clarification Russ:

It's only "Karabu time" if the ticket was purchased through Karabu (i.e. Lowestfare.com or his other methods). If one purchases the ticket directly from the airline (www.twa.com for example) or other ways (such as travelocity.com) then no Karabu. As an example, about a month ago, I was getting ready to purchase a ticket though a travel agency because they said they had a deal with TWA and were able to offer 25% off the published fare. I assumed they had some type of bulk deal directly with the airline. As I was getting ready to give the guy my credit card #, I asked him a couple questions and he revealed that they were actually Karabu tickets. I told him "sorry, but TWA isn't going to make a penny off this ticket so I'm going to buy directly from the airline" and then did so.

An unexamined life isn't worth living.
