CLE: De-icing Truck Hits A WN 737

I found this little gem in today's (Sunday, April 8th) Plain Dealer,

From what I understand, we werent the only airline with issues with Aeromag this week. 2 other aircraft last night and 1 more this morning also got hit.

There are some serious issues with this company, most notably their communications on the pad. Aircraft are not called by tail number, but rather by the lane they are in (I think) which causes some serious confusion. I have been told (by someone who should know) that the FAA is investigating their practices....

And just for the record, the flight in question (313 to MDW) did not cancel, it continued with another aircraft =)

I wonder if these are happening because some of the trucks are driven remotely from the cherry pickers rather than have a driver in the cab? I saw this a couple weeks ago and thought that it looked a bit risky.

Does Southwest contract with this company for deicing service rather than use our own trucks and staffing? Here at SAT we have two deicing trucks and our Ramp Sups and Agents handle all deicing service.

Yeah, on a CO aircraft on some kind (oh my God, I can't even remember the destination or aircraft model anymore -- and it was within the past few months) I was in the exit row window staring out the window just waiting for an accident to occur --between the fact that they were being remotely driven and the driver (at least on my side of that particular aircraft) seemed to be driving a bit, er, agressively for the conditions

It is a common use facility that opened by the city this year due to concerns with the environmental impact of the glycol runoff.

Since it happened about 8pm, we probably turned (what would have been) a terminating aircraft out for 313. After temporary repairs, the damaged aircraft MX ferried out to HOU for permanent repair...

It was only a matter of time. They drive the truck with a joystick from up in the bucket, it's not the greatest vantage to be steering a large vehicle from. Good thing winter's almost over, these guys seem to be sucking up the joint.

Actually, it was 2809 that cancelled. It was booked to all of 12, so we combined the 108 off of 313 and the 12 off of 2809 and sent them all as 313. As OPNL said, the damaged bird ferreied to HOU at about 0845 this am.

A few years back I was working ramp for Comair in FNT and I saw first hand what a tug and a two week trainee can do to a brand new aircraft. The day before the Airtran 717 went on maintanence and it was a direct flight to MCO over Christmas. I remember the station manager running around doing everything she could to get another AC up to FNT. That evening Airtran Corperate sent a brand spanking new 717 up to FNT to accomadate all those pax going to MCO.
The plane had less than a 1000hrs on it.

I was in the tug pushing back our Comair CRJ and I heard a giant POP! It was so loud I could see our pilots looking around. None of us could tell exactly what it was as we all had head phones on and the engines were running. We continued with our pushback. I remember looking over at the Airtran 717 parked at the adjacent jetway. It had what appreared to be a big access panel open on the nose of the aircraft. I didnt think much of it but as I was pulling back up from the push back I realized that it wasnt an access panel but a giant gouge in the nose of the AC. Next to it was a winter tug with its front and back window blown out.

Some poor trainee that was only there for two weeks was pulling the lav cart up to the AC. Instead of going forward she dropped it in reverse and slammed into the plane. I saw the Airtran station manager actually crying when she found out what happened. I felt really bad for her after all that work she did to get eveyone on thier way. The FAA spent two days at the airport and the AC was grounded for over a week until they could cut all the metal out and replace it with a sheet of sheet medal to ferry it to Maintenance.

The fortunate thing was that there was no pax onboard yet and what was an inccedent could very well have been and accident.

Without having to worry about chainging seat assignments I wonder it it even took that long?

Part of me thinks it would have been really funny to, say, board 313 from gate B6, close the door, pull the aircraft up to B7 and begin boarding for 2089 Big grin

I had heard before that CLE was not a very high performing station for WN. Any truth to that?

That doesn't surprise me all that much. I mean... It's a Saturday night 8:25pm departure.

Speaking of low load factors on big planes... I remember flying home to CHS from SFO during a family vacation in 1996. We were flying DL and the ATL-CHS leg (an 11 pm departure) was on a 757 that flew first to CAE to drop off passengers and then made the short hop down to CHS. I think there were a total of 8 pax on that flight. 3 got off in CAE. 5 continued to CHS (4 of them were members of my family). Had the whole airplane to ourselves

Until the schedule thats flying now (March 11), we didn't have a sat departure after 1850, and as long as I can remember, we NEVER had a sat departure after about 1930. Now we have a 2025 and a 2130. Any guess how they are performing?
