I heard somewhere that if you transfer from T3 arrivals via the bus, you clear security at a common checkpoint with T2 and T1. Does that mean I can go between terminals 1 and 2 without having to clear security between the two? I am departing out of terminal 2 but would like to do some spotting in terminal 1 as I heard the opportunities are better in T1. So, is the security thing true?

Yes once inside Terminal 2 and you've passed through to the gates there is a walkway that connects to Terminal 1 with no additional security. Terminal 2 is all but useless for photos as there are hardly any windows. Recommend you stay in Terminal 1 for as long as you can as it is much better.

When I used to work in T2, I would go and get lunch from T1, as it's only a 2 or 3 minute walk, with no doors, security checks etc. Very easy to get to.

Any specific areas you guys can recommend for spotting in T1?

T1 and T2 both lack good spots. There are windows which show the taxi areas, but that's it. In T1 it'd be next to Caffé Nero and Pret, or the other window next to HMV (which is in the first part after security)

It's quite a long way from T2, but the Europier (the big glass building sticking out between T1 & T2, which technically can receive arriving flights for both) can provide some good views. As you walk round from T2 into T1, you'll pass a circular seating area, after this turn right for T1 gates 35-56... Keep an eye on the time, though - it'll be a long walk back!!
