UA MX Probelms With The 757

Hey Guys
I have been travelling on United's 757 often in the past couple of weeks.....for a total of 13 times....mostly between BOS ORD and LAX . Out of those 13 flights 8 of the flights had mechanical problems! Is there something wrong with their jets? Or do they just not keep the mx up?

My flight this morning from BOS - ORD had to return to the gate twice for complete power failure ( the crew said that this is what it was). We were taxing and everything turned off- even the engines. We were towed back to the terminal and not let off the jet. the mechanic did something....we pushed back...began to taxi again and the same thing happen all over again. As we pushed back for the third time the pilot got on the intercom and said "Third time is always the charm"!

The rest of the flights had issues with flaps.....tire pressure...lighting issue.....something indicating that a door was open....oils problems.....the list continues.....all minor problems...but the occurrence is pretty damn high!

What do you think is up?

All United's contracts are in place until January 2010.

Typical aging issues along with United flying what few airplanes it has as much as they safely and possibly can. All of their planes are having maintenance issues....they're in the air a lot with many take offs and landings. Something's got to give.

Aircraft are made by Airbus and Boeing to take off and land every day in a variety of missions. The 757 is but one example of aircraft from both manufacturers that does its job very well.

AA, DL, and US [to name a few] use their 757 fleets heavily in a broad variety of missions - this is one of the capabilities of the aircraft that keep it in demand on the resale market. Some of the US 757 aircraft are, if I am not mistaken, ones that were originally delivered to EA in the 1980's.

UA is a carrier that embodies some of the worst practices of the old legacies, and they have let operations suffer as a result of constantly deferred capital maintenance and acquisition.

On the other hand, their CEO does have one heck of a compensation package.

Okay....so they let mx go until the bird possibly cannot fly? To have a complete power failure twice in a row does not sounds too great to me. Thank god we were just taxiing and not in the air both times!

Most likely, you have had a string of bad luck, causing 8 of your last 13 flights on the type to have MX issues. I think it would be naive to assume that United was somehow 'cutting corners' with their 757 maintenance program.

Dude,
The lights went out in the cabin...the air shut off, and so did the engines. We had to be towed back to the terminal. Once at the gate.....we did not deplane. There was a guy doing something to one of the engines the first time. The second time.....a guy did something to what appeared to be the bottom of the tail. In all it took about 50 minutes to fix!

String of bad luck? I think not. I may just not be meant to fly on UAL. I fly US, DL and B6 regularly and never had so many MX problems!

Just curious if you were on flight 881 out of BOS. That is the only flight I could find (in the computer) that returned to the blocks on Sunday in BOS. If that was your flight, it arrived in ORD 4 minutes late.

United does not have any ex Eastern aircraft because Easter's 757's were RR powered, United's are P&W powered. Delta and NW are 2 other major US carriers with P&W powered 757's. Actually US Air got a number of Eastern's old 757's. I do not know their service status. Some one else will come along and answer that.

The power failure could have been a bad BPCU(bus power control unit) which is a plug and play LRU(Line Replaceable Unit). Tire pressures are a common thing on kick off flights we deAAl with tem all the time on the mornings first flights, part of the reason is mAAngement cut back the overnight checks to the faa min. so some checks don't service tires.

But the 757's are getting long in the tooth and are starting to require more attention but I still love working on them. And they still are a dependable ariframe.

I'm not as familiar with the "industry" so, could you elaborate on your statement(s) as they pertain to the thread? What is UA doing wrong and how could they improve their practices. I very often read statements that are critical but yet don't propose a solution to the problem at hand.

It has a "sleep" timer.

An APU problem, perhaps? Seems to me that if the problem was happening in the midst of startup, maybe the APU wasn't kicking enough power to get the PWs spinining. Disclaimer: I'm most definitely not a mechanic!
