Read off another board that the GF board of directors held a meeting on Sunday and it was decided to reduce the fleet size from the existing 34 aircraft to 28 aircraft, with an all Airbus fleet. Unprofitable routes will be suspended.
No way this is going to happen. In the year since they started operations here they have increased their number of flights, opened a new office, and send the A340 in instead of the usual A332, although its usually just during the summer. I don't think it will be disappearing off their map any time soon.

Whatever routes they keep or drop. They seriously need to up their game, to stand a chance against the likes of EY, QR, EK, etc. GF looks like a third world airline compared to others in the region.

Full flights and profitable are two different things. It comes down to yield. Our flights to PPT from LAX were full every single flight. Was it profitable, no.

I agree, Gulf Air is a dyeing airline right infront of our eyes and one day it will be gone. I'm hoping the Bahrain government can save it once they gain 100% ownership soon.
Out of the 5 767s which were sent to DUB recently, 3 are said to be finished completely...

at the risk of hijacking this thread can I suggest that you point that out to some people on the New Zealand aviation thread who are still convinced that Air New Zealand has cut themselves off from a gold mine by axing PPT-LAX - although I admit that where CO was 13 years ago and where NZ are now are two very different places

DUB is, apparently, haemorrhaging like a burst artery.
Good loads down the back, but upfront is full of upgrades to cope with overselling down the back.
Only time will tell if it is true.

Unprofitable destinations include CCU, FRA, HKG, SIN, SYD & JNB and Iran.
ATH too is very low yielding for them and heavily dependant upon feeder traffic from Australia and Far East leisure destinations such as BKK and KUL.
I wonder if they will actually live up to their word concerning suspending all these destinations. Also it seems that they are reducing the fleet by 6 aircraft i.e. getting rid of 6 B 763ERs.

If they were able to secure ~2010 production slots....Would be a good product differentiator from EK, QR & EY......

Will these be sold or scrapped?
Why would these perfectly good 763ERs be scrapped? The second hand market for all widebody aircraft, including 763ERs, is rather strong and these airplanes will find new homes.
Delta already has a handful of ex-Gulf Air airplanes (is it 4 or 6 airplanes?)....I wonder if they would be interested in acquiring these airplanes? Delta needs all of the longhaul capacity it can get its hands on.

Gulf Air's 763ERs are hardly old either, the early models were delivered to GF in 1989 whereas the newest of the fleet were delivered in 1994. The others are deleivered in 1992/3.
I'm sure they will find new homes very easily, but they were in bad condition recently according to several sources.

It was 6 aircraft. They are the 3P6/ER models in the DL fleet.

Quoting CV580Freak (Reply 17): Looks like HKG, SIN, SYD, CGK, JNB and DUB routes are on the way out
No way. If this happens what will GF be? It'll be a tiny airline flying long haul only to BKK, CDG and LHR. Ridiculous! Let us remember here that GF are only losing 6 planes, and it looks like these will be the 767's to make it an all airbus fleet. If we want to try and assume which destinations will be cut we must look at the current 767 routes and see whether or not they could sustain a 332 or 343.
I feel that routes like CGK and JNB might be cut, but DUB, FRA and SIN will definately not be cut.
SYD is a hard one, it is vital for the sucess of other routes like DUB but un-profitable on it's own. Could GF buy new planes, like maybe some longer range aircraft to make SYD non stop? Do GF still have the QF codeshare going on?
