SAS are to add a second route out of Gatwick after Bergen. They will fly to Aalesund twice a week from June

Interesting, had no ideas they had even started on LGW.

I guess BGO could go year-round, but Aalesund? 2x a week from June could sound like summer-only, but still, cool.

SK actually has quite a few slots at LHR, because of the history of the airline with three capitals etc. I think CPH/ARN/OSL-LHR are all at 5-6 daily, and IIRC SVG and GOT also have their LHR flights (I think two or so daily). Indeed a precious asset for the airline.

SK also did CPH-STN back in 2000 or so (in an attempt at being a pseudo-LCC against Go!), but pulled out (heavily accused of price dumping). Snowflake never came back to STN.

Nice to see some more Scandinavian destinations being offered from London - NB starting Aalborg and now SK to Aalesund.

SK 4631 Lv AES 1845 Ar LGW 2010 73G
SK 4632 Lv LGW 2100 Ar AES 0025 73G

First date of operation I could find is 1 June

SASBraathens (previous Braathens) have been operated BGO-LGW for years. The only reason why it hasn't been transfered to LHR is due to slot restrictions and the route is not a high yield so buying a slot is not worth it.


SASBraathens is also beginning a 2x daily OSL-LCY in August operated by a leased RJ-70, as SAS do from ARN

I always think it is great when SAS start or restart routes, but i would like to see SAS start to counter on the Finnair expansion.

About an month ago i read an interesting comment by the SAS head of international ops, that if only he had 4-5 more widebodies he could easily find new routes to put them on.

I personally would very much like to see SAS get some of the used Airbus widebodies that might come up for sale by other carriers, meaning A330/A340.  bigthumbsup

And in the contract with their pilots is it agreed that they need to expand (i.e get another plane by 31.12.07). However no news on this will come until SAS reveals their new strategy plan in May

Getting a bit off-topic for this thread, but anyways, let's not get too overexcited about a lot of new long-haul from SK - let's not forget that SK is beginning to make money on the long-haul, whereas AY is starting to loose - no wonder IMO, they should focus more on frequencies rather than an impressive route map; what C-pax wanst twice-a-week flights??

If SK gets more widebodies, they should start new routes, yes, but keep up the frequencies they have on long-haul now..

Tried to do a little search to see if I could find any hard facts, came up empty. On AY's webpage you can see a lot of stats for the incredible increase in ASKs, RPKs to Asia most notably, yet nothing on the yield development.

However, I'm sure I've read (probably here on a.net, too) that AY's economic performance on the long-haul has experience a negative trend recently; yields can't keep up. Don't know the extend of it, and it probably does not go for at least BKK and NRT, but still.

I shouldnt think so. This is not an ETOPS route. Unlike in the states it is common for aircraft to be equipped for overwater flights(life vests, cots, etc). In the US most flights are overland, but in Europe this is not always the case.

The only flights I've been on, where the seat cushions have been posted as being a flotation device, have been in the US. Not something I've come across in Europe.

I'd say it's fairly common for aircraft to be equipped with lifevests and liferafts in Europe.

The "extended" in ETOPS means more than 60 minutes away from the nearest airport. Since the flight itself will be approximately two hours actual flying time, the plane will never be more than 60 minutes away from either the origin or the destination airport. In addition, there are lots of airports along the way on the coast of Norway, in Scotland, and in northern England. So no ETOPS required.
