B717 Modifications...what Do You Think?

I read a letter in a recent Aviation Week about suggestions on how to improve the 717. First of all, Boeing is going to use something called the "Toyota Rail System" (or some such thing) to speed up the 717 production line. Airlines have been getting better than expected performance results from the 717, such as increased fuel efficiency. But the plane can be even better. Check it out:

Why doesn't Boeing change the rudder hinges on the 717? The current rudder hinges were inherited from McD, but Boeing has produced a more efficient rudder hinge system for the 757/767 and other aircraft that would reduce drag, and decrease fuel burn rates further, and increase cruise speed and range.

Also, why not add winglets for improved fuel consumption? Boeing has experience building aircraft with winglets with the B747-400 production line and the 737-800 blended winglets. Of course I wouldn't wish the latter on a beautiful plane like the 717, but small winglets might make the plane more fuel efficient.

Now if Boeing has the ability to do this, and are building the 717, why not make it "all that it can be"?

I think they should allow PW to apply the PW6000. Then they would have a shot at a huge order from Northwest.

The rudder change suggested would not allow the 717 to fall under the DC-9 type certificate.

The 717, MD90, MD80, and DC-9 all fall under the same type certificate. A6WE revision 25 was for the 717-200 made on September 1, 1999.

It includes the following..

dc-9-11
dc-9-12
dc-9-13
dc-9-14
dc-9-15
dc-9-15f
dc-9-21
dc-9-31
dc-9-32
dc-9-32 (vc-9c)
dc-9-32f
dc-9-32f (c-9a, c-9b)
dc-9-33f
dc-9-34
dc-9-34f
dc-9-41
dc-9-51
dc-9-81
dc-9-82
dc-9-83
dc-9-87
MD88
MD90-30
717-200

Hope that helps, Al

I think Boeing needs to do what ever it takes to increase the 717 range. I think if they increase it's range there orders will also increase

I agree with Eric Metallica. Alot of airlines have been happy with their MD-80s and if there was a new, mid-range variant, then airlines like AA would perhaps be interested in them as and MD-82, MD-83 replacement. However, they had a good idea with the 717's mid density short range idea. I still believe that it is a nice alternative the smaller RJ's.

Yep - increase the range and stretch it like an MD-8x/9x! Aim to replace the NWA DC-9sm then grow from there!
