On a BA flight back from Manchester yesterday evening, I noticed that the a/c following our landing into Heathrow was a Air India B743 combi. I was not aware that AI had any B743s still flying into Europe or the USA. Assuming this was a one off aircraft replacement, I was wondering about the following:

How does the a/c operate onwards from LHR, as AI don't have B743 crew in London?
Will AI have sold the cargo capacity on the main deck at short notice?
If the cargo hold on the main deck was empty what C of G implications would this have for the flight?

Finally does anyone know why this a/c operated into LHR yesterday, and if it is likely to make another apearance?

The aircraft will usually overnight and the inbound crew will then operate the return after crew rest.

Hi Sean

Thanks for the information. So why is this aircraft operating to LHR? Also, I'm still wondering if the main deck cargo facilities will be put to use on this flight?

Those darn 74Ds are still flying NRT-India flights.
Hopefully, we will see newer equipment in the future.

How much longer are the 743s going to be in the AI fleet for? Those two a/c seem to spend most of their time on the tarmac in BOM.

I believe they are to be retired by end of 2007 or maybe in 2008, by which time AI will get several of their new 777's.... smile
