I was just looking the wikipedia website about Skyteam and it says Air Algerie will be joining in December of this year .Did anyone hear about this?(I know that info on wikipedia is not always correct that is why I am asking here)I always thought that Royal air Maroc would be joining since they have a better African network and brings more the alliance then Air Algerie. I guess this would be more for western african traffic since KE is already becomingan affiliate member. However, I understand AF has a very good western african network so is there really need for an airline like Air Algérie ?

1. There has been no talk I have heard of Air Algerie joining any alliance.

2. KE is Korean Air, which is already a full Skyteam member. I assume that you meant KQ, which will become an affiliate member in the future (no exact date for entry that I have seen).

3. Royal Air Maroc has announced that it is to join OneWorld alliance, not Skyteam.

Where have you looked to find it. I went to Wiki in English, and there's no mention of an exact date. Below is a paper used as a reference for Wiki, and the encyclopedia says that no timetable has been set to join the alliance. By the way, the link below has been added today.

Edit:

The link above wasn't added today, and indeed it was mentionned that the airline was to join the alliance late this year. But today, someone has changed that info to no timetable set ? Is that you ?

It just says they are a potential future member of skyteam just as MAS and that may be as soon as December 2007 though the target years are 2007-2008 !

My bad, I was thinking of Royal Air Jordanian, who is already in OW.

MH was reportedly blackballed from joining Skyteam by AF.

With the extended period that it seems to take for joining Skyteam after announcements, I would not expect any unannounced airlines to complete a skyteam affiliation before 2009, much less the end of this year.

Why did AF blackball MH from joining Skyteam? Would have thought it was a good fit considering SQ & TG in Star, and CX & JL in oneworld.

Rumour has it that it would take away from AF feeding into lucrative OZ market using QF.

Be very cautious about anything you see in Wikipedia unless you can also verify it in another more reliable source.

Well, that might have an impact but it could not be the main reason. Is there any AF insiders that can confirm or not AF is still trying to court TG (despite it is a founding member of *Alliance)?

Delta has said...atleast in the beginning of time when SkyTeam was launched that part of the reason for choosing select airlines was due to the fact of where people wanted to fly to the most popular parts of the world. i.e. Air France & Aeromexico are good examples of Delta's rationale.

Then SkyTeam has surely failed miserably as it fails to have any adequate Asia coverage  Sad. As much as I love ICN, it is in a horrible hub position for all but Americas-Asia connection traffic.

Why a crap airline? Whether or not this is true, I don't know (haven't flown them), but just in case their on-board service is below average: I'd rather fly uncomfortable to some secondary city in Africa, than get a "we don't fly there"-answer from some other alliance.

As far as I consider, an alliance is not meant to be quality award or guarantee (up to a certain degree of course) but a way to expand your network with all facilities like bagage through-check, codesharing, single boarding pass issue, FFP redeamel, etc.

Air Algerie has at least a very modern fleet of 736, 738 and 332 aircraft. They also have an impressive regional network in Northern Africa, only slightly served by AF, and by no carrier in OneWorld or StarAlliance.

By the way, how high-quality (to your definitions) are airlines like bmi or SAS? (for me, they fit perfectly into SAS as they both offer great connections to me (BD feeds well on AC and UA at LHR, SK has an unmatched scandinavian network).

Virtually all major airlines have interline agreements with dozens of airlines other than members of the major alliance they're a part of (if they are an alliance member). There seems to be an impression that in order to purchase a single ticket at a through fare, and check your baggage through to the final destination, all flights have to be on members of one of the major alliances. That is definitely not the case.

The French wikipedia listed Air Algérie as a potential member:
