Much of the United Airlines 737 fleet is committed to Shuttle operations, but a large number of 737-300's and -500's operate mainline services. I would like
to know what UA's plans are, if any, to replace these aging jets? The -300's
are among the oldest -300's flying. Any thoughts? 737-600's? A318's? A319's?

I don't think they still have 200's. The 300's and 500's are still young but will be replaced in the long run with more A320's and A319's. United loves the A320. Yes, it is true that United was at one time one of the largest and earliest 737 operators but they decided in the early 1990's to order A320's because they were more comfortable and had better performance than the 737's. They thought of ordering 737-400's in addition to the 300's and 500's but they never bought any because they prefered the A320. The oldest 737-322 is only 13 years old so they'll be around for quite a while, at least ten more years. I predict that the last 737 will be retired in the mid 2010's. United won't order NG737's, the A320 will become the dominant aircraft.

Which makes their oldest 733 fifteen years old, hardly ancient in airliner circles. With the potential aquisition of US and all its 733s and 734s, I don't think we'll see a non-737 United for a LONG TIME. (At least I hope not).

United airlines os one of the largest 737 operators in the world. Currently United does not have the equipment to replace the aging 737-291s. They are being D-Checked again, and should be here for a few more years.
The A320 joined United's fleet back in 1994 as a 727 replacement. It really did not replace that plane. This was before the 737NG was avalible. The A319 followed when orders for more airbusses were placed.
United will be operating 737s for a long time. I will not rule out the possiblity of more of them. Currently having 30 736s would do United well. There is no need for the 73Q, and the 738. Thats what the Airbusses are for.
United loves its 737s, and its one of their Largest Assests. If you make three flights on United, atleast one of them will be in a 737.
For the people who tell you that UA will never order anymore 737s, well, I'm not going to disagree with them. I do, however want to tell you that if it has to do with part support, or reducing the number of fleet types, that is pure bull shit. The 737s will be here for another 20 years, and UA will have a part stock for them, so adding more wont hurt them, or really create extra costs. The 737NGs are common to the 777. Never say never to more 737s, they may get a great deal from Boeing. You never know.
