I was wondering if any songs that make references to plane crashes have ever been played by an airline's audio entertainment system. Although most movies are edited to eliminate such superstitions, it would be far more difficult to edit such song lyrics. It would be much easier to simply exclude the songs from the IFE playlist. A couple songs that come to mind are:
"Ironic" by Alanis Morrisette
Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids good-bye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
'Well isn't this nice...'
And isn't it ironic ... don't you think
and
"Wish You Were Here" by Mark Wills
She got a call that night but it wasn't from him
It didn't sink in right away, ma'am the plane went down
Our crews have searched the ground
No survivors found she heard him say

With some airlines now carrying satellite radio (which can be played everywhere else) for its IFE; deleting such songs would be pratically impossible unless whole stations are deleted.
"TransEastern! You'll feel like you've never left the ground because we treat you like dirt!" SNL Parady ad circa 1981

One you won't hear is "Ebony Eyes" by the Everly Brothers.....released in 60 or 61, I think
safe
If two people agree on EVERYTHING, then one isn't necessary.
At the time, Alanis Morrisette just released a greatest hits album and it was featured on the IFE. They did play the track "Ironic". When they got to the lyrics about the plane crashing, that sentence was awkwardly cut out of the song.
Later when "You Ought To Know" was played, they left in the lyric "And are you thinking of me when you fuck her?"
So on United back in May 2004, mention of a plane crash on the IFE is not okay. The f-word was okay however.

I recall boarding music that included Dido's, "White Flag." The lyrics included, "I will go down with this ship." I always thought that to be a bad omen.

Quoting Steve332 (Reply 3): It was mentioned in the film 'Conair'. Sweet Home Alabama was being played on the plane and one of the prisoners says,
"Isn't it Ironic that were celebrating to a song by a band who were made famous when the died in a plane crash"
"Define irony, a bunch of idiots dancing on a plane, to a song made famous by a band killed in a plane crash"
I still uses that line from time to time.
Nice Trip Report!!! Great Pics, thanks for posting!!!! B747Forever

On a side note, some movies are not played or have their scenes deleted on IFE. I remember back when Rainman came out, no airline would show the movie although it was an Oscar winner. I wonder if QF showed the movie, though. I am not sure if ConAir, Airport(s), Airplane(s) were ever shown on flights.

I remember listening to the Red Hot Chili Peppers "Aeroplane" on a UAL flight to SJO many many years ago. Though it doesnt specify a plane crash its got quiet a few references to death. Great drunken karaoke song though

Another example of this was Speed which I saw on SQ, the bit where the bus hits the plane being towed across LAX was cut.
Airplane was the in flight movie on the first ever VS flight IIRC.
I wonder if we'll ever see Snakes on a plane on a plane?
Emirates has it on their IFE. I was listening to it before takeoff. But it's not ironic because I'm not afraid to fly.. Instead I watched the magnificent flex of the wing of the 77W all flight long. And we didn't crash!
I guess if nobody knows about the songs on the IFE or don't know the songs full stop it should be ok. If they play it over the P/A however..

Quoting Planemannyc (Reply 14): BA is cutting Richard Branson and the VS tail from the new Bond movie
I was flying EWR to PHX (CO of course) and noticed they cut a LOT out of the new movie. I guess people dying of poison in their drink isnt something you want to show during meal service at FL 37...lol

i was playing flightsim X when i was flying CX YVR-HKG @FL370. the flight was operated by a 744 with flight no. CX839. i flew the same a/c with the same flight number on the same route in flightsim during the flight. and crashed somewhere near Japan coz i ran out of fuel (fuel leak). that person right next to me saw the whole thing and turn around and said "could you play another game? you are creeping me out."
edited for typo.

Hong Kong is not China. Not better or worse, just different.
