BKK, HKG, And/or SIN In Delta's Future? 777LR's?

I was wondering if BKK, HKG, and/or SIN were in Delta's future? Maybe Australia or NZ? Might this be why they're getting the 777-200LR's?

Out of three cities HKG has better chance IMO.

HKG and SYD are probably the cities on that list that will come "soonest", although BKK may come at some point, and SIN and even AKL may not be completely unfeasible in the long run.

I don't think you'll see any of those in the next few years, though. The first 772LRs already on order will go to China (or replace the 772ER on JFK-BOM, freeing those airplanes up for China) and the next will likely fly some combination of ATL-JNB nonstop and ATL-BOM (or ATL-somewhere else in India). A 772LR/787 order is likely to be announced after bankruptcy, and those aircraft could expand Asia, but those deliveries probably wouldn't start until at least 2009 or 2010.

DL's next routes to Asia are likely to be out of LAX with 763ERs retrofitted with winglets and so will be limited to the range of such aircraft. LAX-ICN and LAX-NRT are feasible examples.

Why would an airline with a huge 763ER fleet start transpacific 763ER service when its never been done in the history of 763ER's from LAX to north Asia ? Only Seattle or Vancouver to China, Japan(Nagoya) and Korea have I seen 763 service.

The same reason CZ would start central transpacific twinjet service with a 772ER when it'd never been done before.... because they could, and because they could make money in doing so.

HKG is in China. So, yes, they might as well start service to HKG.

I believe you just answered your own question. If they had a huge 777 or A340 fleet, I imagine they would use those for transpacific service. Reaching Japan or Korea is achievable from LAX, especially with winglets, and with cabin updates and the new lie-flat BusinessElite suites the product can be equal to or better than that provided on larger aircraft.

HKG is in China.

I guess I should have been more specific. The first DL 772LRs are scheduled for 1Q 2008*, which is when the next route authority to mainland China is being awarded, and DL is the frontrunner for that service. So the new aircraft will either service ATL-PEK or ATL-PVG, or substitute for the 772ERs currently on JFK-BOM to allow those aircraft to fly to PEK or PVG. If for whatever reason DL does not get the China authority, ATL-BOM or ATL-JNB nonstop are more likely than ATL-HKG.

Don't get me wrong; I'd like to see DL in HKG, SYD, and SIN as much as anyone. I'm just pointing out that my understanding is that those cities are not their top priorities and their ULH fleet will be limited for the next few years.

*-Recent rumors indicate that DL may actually take delivery of two 772LRs intended for AI this year. If that happens, I think they would go ATL-India or ATL-JNB nonstop. SYD would be great, but I just don't know that it's the most lucrative option.

I agree with this viewpoint completely. India, JNB and PVG (pending approval) need to be DL's first priorities for the 777 LR. When we talk about destinations like SYD, BKK, and SIN, it seems like people want them because it would be cool to have jets that fly that far of distance, not because they can make money doing it. ATL-SYD for example sounds great to talk about, but I doubt that it can make very much as compared to destinations like JNB or BOM.

I think if they got these, they'd put the 2 'LR's on ATL-JFK-BOM at first, and then transfer the 772ER's from that flight to ATL-DKR-JNB. Don't forget that DL is still trying to get rights to serve PVG, and it wouldn't be very good for them to tie up all of their capacity on new routes, and then get China rights but not have any available aircraft. If they only can get 2 LR's before the China award, I doubt they'd open up any new routes requiring a 777 until they find out on that one.

As to the original question, I would guess that ATL-HKG is very likely, but BKK/SIN very much less so. TG and SQ have had a very hard time making non-stop flights to LAX/NYC work either their flights, and I doubt DL would have much more success (especially to ATL, which has much less O&D than either of those). Plus, they can just continue to route pax through ICN if they really need to get them there.
