Does anybody have a general insight how Lufthansa is doing on route FRA to DTW now that they have 2 flights per day ?
Reason:
DTW was about the only destination in the northern and eastern sections of the U.S. for which I could secure a seat for a Business-Class Award Ticket (MIles&More; departing from HAJ) on short notice (booked 11 days prior to flight on 29-APR).
Only other available suitable flight was HAJ-FRA-DUS-ORD with the transatlantic route flown by Privatair's A319CJ, but departure was too early on a Sunday morning for me ...

I don't know precisely, but prior to the flight, DTW has been performing nicely for LH. Seeing as to how they're 2x daily here, I'm taking it that they're pleased with the market here.
Though my question is, what on earth are you going to be doing here in the Motor City? Just IM me if you want any recommendations on things to do here as there really isn't much.

Quoting LHboyatDTW (Reply 1): Though my question is, what on earth are you going to be doing here in the Motor City?
After touchdown, I will immediately be heading south spending the first night in Monroe, MI (I deemed that spot far enough outside metro Detroit in order to not be caught in traffic problems Monday morning) and then drive on to Indianapolis,IN (with a 2-3 hour stop en-route in Dayton, OH at the USAF museum) continuing a vacation.
I had to break my vacation in the U.S. due to family (health) reasons and the next best thing to do was to book a reward flight IAD-Germany-DTW. The mentioned "health" reason OTOH would not be qualifying for cancelling the other flight ticket I had purchased earlier with KL AND get a refund from a travel insurance.
And as Flying Blue (AF/KL) could not get me back to Germany from around WAS (incl. NYC) on short notice and then back to the U.S. (any suitable airport with continuation to IND by car/plane) on an Award-ticket, I spent some of my miles at LH who had more vacant seats ...
P.S. In order to pamper my mind, I will NOT count the beans (€, $) that I (will) have spent on this (double-)trip and for a few non-refundable flights in the U.S. that I will not be able to take.
I have taken this decision and now I will have to live with the (financial) consequences ...
But the routing looks interesting: HAJ-AMS-IAD-FRA-HAJ-FRA-DTW-(surface)-IND-MSP-AMS-HAJ on 2 tickets KL/NW and LH (one paid for, one award - both in Business Class).

Quoting NWA757boy (Reply 3): I saw a LH A340 the other day in DTW, first time I saw something other than a A330 for LH
IIRC, before (enough) A333 became available at LH, they sent the A343 daily to DTW.
Quoting NWA757boy (Reply 3): Well NW is starting 757 service along with A333 service on DTW-FRA
If there wouldn't be the (negative) chance to get a domestic NW B757 for a transatlantic flight (AFAIK, NW has not yet re-configured enough B757's to support all the new transatlantic flights, I would have had considered the new AMS-BDL flight for later this year. But I hesitate to pay for a Business Class ticket and then end up sitting 8 hours in (not too comfy for longhaul) NW's Domestic Business Class ...

yes I flew the A343 when it still came to DTW on a regular basis. I don't miss it as much as my BA 777, but it's always a pleasant change from the usual A333. I still remember my dad commenting on how smooth and quiet that thing flew.

I wonder if this flight is summer only because NW only feels the demand is only there in the summer or because the 752 can't make it westbound nonstop in the winter...

They have to be reconfigured, NW can't sub in a domestic 757 for Trans-Atlantic service, since they need the winglets, and lower-density seating to have the desired range. And only the Trans-Atlantic 757 fleet has ETOPS. Plus, from a product offering standpoint, it wouldn't work. They'd rebook onto other flights instead.

Primarily since seasonal demand drops off. NW traditionally backs off on its European flying in the off-season. I wouldn't be surprised to see LH drop back to 1 a day during the winter too.

Yes, NW certainly adjusts their winter TATL scheduling reliably. But I wonder if the 752 had longer range if they would give it a whirl year-round.
