AeroMexico To CLE

What happened? I thought that this flight was to commence with thrice weekly service from CLE-MEX. What happened with route authority? I know they are following through with SEA and that some services have recently been added or restored. Is the CLE thing ever going to happen?

If landings fees are a problem, do you think we'd ever see CAK International services? I know that is a huge long shot.

Thanks.

If I had a dollar for every Aeromexico route authority granted that was never exercised with an actual flight, I would be a millionaire. They are notorious for route filings they never fly. Very annoying. I suspect the file for routes they know they have no intention to fly.

Bingo.

Though, shockingly, they applied for Seattle-Mexico City a month ago, and the flight is now bookable.

At the time of the filing, AM expected to operate CLE-CUN charter flights and was going to use the CLE-MEX route to rotate the charter aircraft in and out of CLE earning some money on what was essentially going to be a ferry flight. The charter agreement apparently fell through and neither the MEX nor the CUN routes were ever operated.

The CLE-MEX authority was, at AM's request, for one year only, which was odd, since DOT regularly grants exemption authority for two years. When the year was up, AM advised the DOT they did not intend to apply for an extension. So, the authority lapsed on its one-year anniversary last February.

IIRC they charter contract fell apart at the last minute. CO was preparing to support the flight and it fizzled out right before it got started.

The only international service I see at CAK for a while will be private jets. In the future I think CAK could support a 1 weekly charter flight to CUN. Other then that without Customs service don't look for it.

CAK and YNG would serve two very large markets, well related to CAK and the like...

Even though I would be more than happy to see an airline start MEX-CAK non-stop (my family lives in Coshocton county, close to CAK airport), I don't see a market for this flight. If AM ever starts CLE, it would be because of the charter contract (positioning aircraft) or because they will have a full cooperation with CO in order to fill the plane with connecting passengers...

...yet still no formal announcement on their website... Very strange way of doing business; after a couple of months they will probably yank the flight (claiming not enough traffic) without ever putting the word out to try to generate some business!

I dealt with AM for 30 years as a travel agent starting in the '70s and, well, some things never change... (Certainly nothing in San Diego regarding AM ever has...)

Interesting. Maybe it is time to go visit the hometown of grunge music and Starbucks. I hope AM does well on this route... I agree with all of you that AM needs to spread the word if it wants potential passengers to be aware of this!

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

I will personally fly to Ohio and hand you a $100 cash the day AM starts MEX-CAK over CLE. I'd love to see some more expansion and possible international routes or route from CAK, but business Mexico will not happen soon. I'd love to see at least Jazz on YYZ-CAK. Hopefully more expansion as CAK will allow for a small area for Customs on-call. But time will tell considering the economy of the Canton-Akron area is really in the pits right now.

AM has a very peculiar way of doing business... I blame some of its CEO's who do not have airline experience and they are trying to run an airline as a supermarket. The biggest example is its current CEO, Mr. Conesa, who comes from the Ministry of Finance and was appointed CEO in order to sell the airline, but does not have a clue of what an airline is. Right now AM is trying to change its union contracts claiming that MX did so and, therefore, they have a disadvantage. This happens less than a year after they increased benefits and accepted salary increases for all its union employees attached to productivity levels (weird, they have a first I agree, now I disagree attitude). Anyway, don't expect much from AM in the coming months, they are losing market share in domestic routes at a fast pace and they will try to start international routes to compensate. The only problem is planning, they don't have much time so they will open and close routes depending on bookings. Take for example MX, who started selling tickets for its MEX-GUA-SJO-GUA-MEX and MEX-SJO-PTY-SJO-MEX flights and now they cancelled both flight and re-booked all passengers in any flight they could find. I just got a refund for one of my tickets, since they couldn't find me a seat to SJO.

AM will never start MEX-CAK, since they are a full frills airlines serving major airports. They don't like to serve small markets close to big cities. But I'm still confident that one of our new LCC's will start flying to cheap airports in the United States. My bets go to Viva Aerobus, who is going strong in the Mexican domestic market and will soon start US flights. They have a superb operation and I had the pleasure to see one of its turnaround in CJS last Sunday (25 minutes to turn the aircraft using an airbridge). Flight was booked with 140 passengers (think their B733's hold 144). I was talking to the police officer who works inside the gates and she told me that Viva's flight to CJS is almost always on time and always full and that it has better on-time performance than AM, 6A, JR and IJ...

About Jazz, I would like to see them fly to CAK too, but they already fly to CMH (3x day) and to CLE (3x day) using the DH1, so they have the area well covered. Additionally, their fares are outrageous for the distance, so I don't see a market for AC, but maybe for FL if it ever decides to include Canada in its routemap...

MEX-CLE nice try! But you'll have to wait another 4 to 5 years in order to see an increase of VFR and O/D's between these two cities. When I lived in Chicago i use to visit a lot DTW and CLE around 5 years ago and i must say there's still some more time to see that region covered by mexicans. This could be another BOS venture, opposite to SEA which i think a flight there was badly needed!!!

Bad planning there too!! Very few days to start selling the route before start. MX should have announced at least with 6 months of anticipation this. I'm currently lost right now as how frequencies to GUA and SJO will end as well as the new service to PTY. But still... again.. very interesting times about to come.

I believe both airlines are reacting to domestic low cost carrier pressure although Aeromexico is being hurt much more than Mexicana as I have read in these forums.

I believe both will eventually find their way especially Mexicana and hopefully Aeromexico will find a good new owner and prosper and grow.

In the very long term, a combination of AM and MX might not be such a bad idea, fleet-issues notwithstanding. The circumstances in a few years' time with respect to market share in Mexico will be radically different from the time when our antitrust authorities rejected an AM-MX merger. Just some food for thought.

In my opinion Am will be in a Bay Area city (which they serve none) before the start CLE. The SEA service will be interesting. I'm interested in how AS will respond. Have not heard anything yet.

I'm still hoping AS will restart SFO-GDL

Funjet Vacations was going to use AM for the CLE CUN routing and that did in fact fall through.
