I´m interested in the "structure" of Airports in your country

For explanation:
FRA has got the leading turnstile-function. They´ve got the most intercontinental destinations by far (due to the turnstile of Lufthansa).

MUC follows, they became turnstile in the last years. They have got the most important intercontinental routes.

DUS and the Berlin airports are NO turnstiles. Their few long-range routes are due to the high population in this region.

The other airports CGN/HAJ/HAM/NUE/STR/LEJ/DRS and so on MOSTLY have domestic and european connections and are feeder to the turnstiles (...I know, DL flies to STR).

In Germany it´s like following listed:
FRA: 45 Mio. passengers/year: leading turnstile
MUC: 20 Mio. passengers/year: turnstile
---------------------------------------
DUS: 15 Mio. passengers/year: some long-range-flights
but (in my opinion) no turnstile
other: -10 Mio. passengers: connections MOSTLY in Europe, and leeding FRA/MUC.

How is the "structure" in your country, Im very interested in your answers!

The Netherlands:
1. AMS - Int./Dom/Cargo. KLM Hub.Number 1/2 in the world competing with Changi Airport. One terminal, easy transfer. Rare airlines within Europe: CZ/B3/VR.
2. Rotterdam - Int./Dom.
3. Maastricht/Aachen - Int./Dom/Cargo - TK/MH/IB
4. Eindhoven - Int./Dom.also AFB
5. Eelde/Groningen - only charter
6. Enschede - only charter. These are the most important airports within the Netherlands.

In Norway we have these top 5 airports! (1999 figures)

1. Oslo - Gardermoen (OSL), 14.1 mill. pax. Int./Dom.
2. Bergen - Flesland (BGO), 3.5 mill. pax. Int./Dom.
3. Stavanger - Sola (SVG), 2.8 mill. pax. Int./Dom.
4. Trondheim - Værnes (TRD), 2.6 mill. pax. Int./Dom.
5. Tromsø - Langnes (TOS), 1.0 mill. pax. Int./Dom.

in Croatia biggest is Zagreb with sligtly over 1 million pax/year
it is the home base of Croatia Airlines and it is the only city with larger international network (relative to other apts in Croatia) and it is served by 10 international airlines
following are
Split - plenty of links and several intl. destinations, big charter traffic in summer
Dubrovnik - mostly dom to ZAG, intl. mostly charters
Pula, Zadar, - same as above
Rijeka - very small traffic
Losinj, Brac - small islands apts, although there are some intl charters
Osijek - seasonal link to Dubrovnik

Brazil:

1. Sao Paulo (GRU): International/ Domestic/ Little cargo. Main gateway to South America, it´s growing fast and its structure can´t handle all the traffic in busy days.

2. Sao Paulo (CGH): domestic/regional/ shuttle. The busiest airport in Brazil. Hadles a lot of executive planes.

3. Campinas (Viracopos): cargo/small regional. Basicly a cargo airport, with a couple of regional flights. International cargo flights from FEDEX, UPS, CARGOLUX. LHCARGO, etc.

4. Rio de Janeiro (GIG): international/domestic. Recently expanded with the new terminal 2. Capacity of 15 million passengers. current 5 million, traffic has decreased during the 90s due to the boom at GRU.

5. Rio de Janeiro (SDU): regional/executive. 2nd busiest of the country.

6. Salvador(SSA), Recife(REC), Fortaleza(FOR) and Natal(NAT): Airports from NE Brazil. Domestic and few international flights to Europe, USA, Argentina. Being expanded. TAP operates non-stop flights to all of them from LIS.

7. Manaus(MAO), Belem(BEL): Gateway airports to the Amazon region, N of Brazil. Domestic/international/cargo/regional flights to small cities inside the Amazon Forest. International route: Miami, La Paz, Santa Cruz, Suriname.

8. Porto Alegre(POA), Curitiba(CWB), Florianopolis(FLN) and Iguassu Falls: domestic/cargo/international. Flights to Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. Busy routes to SE Brazil.

9. Brasilia(BSB): domestic/international. Strategic located, its used as a informal hub to major cities of Brazil.

10. Belo Horizonte(CNF): international/domestic. White elefant. 19 miles from downtown. AA and CO operate flights to Miami and New York(EWR) respectively.
Belo Horizonte(PLU): regional/shuttle. Mainly shuttle flights to CGH snd SDU.

In Puerto Rico Its as follows :
San Juan Luis Munoz Marin Int. Airport - Its the most important airport with a great amount of cargo activity. American has a hub and twa has it as a focus city. The other main American carriers operate and euro and latin carriers to. Its called the hub of the carribbean

Condado airport-executive and local carriers.

Mayaguez airport-main carrier American eagle

Aguadilla aiport-main carriers Twa , Continental and huge cargo ops.

Ponce airpory-Main carriers cape air, american eagle

In Belgium, the main airport is Brussels National (BRU). It's Sabena's hub and there are many foreign carriers. It is the only Belgian airport where you see major airlines.

Besides Brussels, there are 4 other important airports in Belgium:
-Deurne, in Antwerp. It's VLM's home base. VLM is a Belgian commuter airline.
-Bierset, in Liege. Many cargo flights at night.
-Charleroi. This is where Sabca is located. Sabca is the Belgian aerospace industry.
-Oostend. Heavy cargo aircrafts land there.

There is one big airport in Luxemburg, it's simply Luxemburg. It's Cargolux's home base. Cargolux is an all cargo long haul airline.

Hope there will be coming a few more answers in the next days. Im very interesting in the US Airports. For example: are PHL and IAD big gateways to the world, or is only New York the big turnstile? Which Airport is more international: EWR or JFK?

I would be thankful for replies.

Ben, Isn't Charleroi Airport actually Gossilies? I lived in Belgium from 1967-1973, and I remember going to an airshow there. Saw a Force Arienne de Belgique F-104 do aerobatics. I lived in Waterloo which is under one of the approaches to Zaventhem. I often looked up to see Sabena Caravelles, 707s, 727s, 747s, plus planes from other airlines. Very fond memories indeed. Vive la Belgique!

In Finland, Helsinki-Vantaa (HEL) is the principal airport for both scheduled and charter passenger and cargo traffic with about 10 million pax last year. No contest here.

Oulu (OUL) is the second-largest in terms of passenger volume, but still comes way behind Helsinki: about 700 000. Oulu's comfortable distance from Helsinki and the city's importance as a hi-tech centre make up for a large quantity of business travel that supports notable HEL-OUL frequency.

Tampere-Pirkkala (TMP) and Turku (TKU), serving the second and third largest cities, respectively, come next.

Another worth mentioning is Rovaniemi (RVN) in Lapland. This airport attracts a colourful bunch of charters each year around christmas time - the Concorde was a regular visitor up until this year...

Other Finnish airports mainly cater for domestic flights to Helsinki although many also have connections to Stockholm with Air Botnia. Some also have frequent Air Force activity.

There are several airports in the states that are served by international carriers. MSP, LAX, SFO, SEA, DFW, DTW, LAS, MIA, HOU, MSY, the list goes on. ORD, BOS, LAX, JFK, ERW, and the Wahington DC area airports are the largest, but I don't have the numbers. I do know that if a Canadian or Mexican airline flies into an airport in the states, that airport is considered international because of customs.
