Did UPS Ever Operate Metro's?...

...The reason I ask is that I have this photo of an Ameriflight Metro that I took on the ramp at CLE back in 1998, and it had a brown cheatline that closely matched UPS brown, and the registration ended in 'UP', (N544UP) . So is this just coincidence, or did someone actually operate them at one time in UPS brown?

I believe (please correct me if I'm wrong) that these aircraft were operated under a similar arrangement to the FedEx Cessna 208s, where they were farmed out to small operators to fly.

Good goes around!

Holy crud, how did I miss those?? Sorry...but thanks! I was never aware of this connection, and I guess I'm a bit surprised. And I can see that they were operated by smaller carriers, much like the FedEx mentioned above. Thanks for the help, much appreciated.

Yeah, both Ameriflight, and MartinAir (Martech) with their C208's operate out of DFW with UPS. I have seen a couple of Merlins with old UPS colors, but it seems that Ameriflight is coming into their own. With their own color scheme and newer airplanes.

UPS has a few 135 cargo operators flying for them. When you account for the Key Lime agreement they have, they have a de-facto hub at DEN, I can imagine its like that at quite a few other places as well.

As an ex-226 driver this is near to my heart! i believe that UPS did not actually crew these planes, but rather owned them like FedEx owns several Maritnair, and Mountain Air Cargo frames. If I can remember correctly, Merlin Express out of Montana, Berry Air out of San Marcos, Martin Air, and Superior Aviation from Lansing were big 226 / 227 operator on their behalf, Also Ameriflight used to have a CVG hub for DHL using DHL owned 226 and 227's.

The 226 was a great plane and excellent ice hauler. It is too bad the "punkies" of today will never get to cut their teeth on such a plane. They go strait from a wet commercial / multi to the right seat of an RJ, and by pass the last vestige of real flying. Good for them. But I will never forget my year in the San Antonio Sewer Tube Smile

Hope this helps.

Winglets on a Falcon are "over-painting" a great work of art.

The Metro browntails were all operated by Merlin Express, a division of Fairchild. I worked for them for four years. We hubbed out of SAT, MIA, SJU, and some place up in North Dakota for UPS. We also did some flying for FedEx out of some of those cites. The side I worked for was a ANG support contract that maintained a fleet of Metros for the AF and Army Guard at various sites areound the country. Between the Military and Commercial side we maintained the largest fleet of Metros, I think we had close to 100 at one time.
