With DL BK Over, What Is Going On With LAX Lease?

We haven't heard much about this recently, but the default on the leases was supposed to lead on reclaiming T5. But I've not heard much, and now that DL is out of BK, the airport had more ability to go forward with their plan to take T5 back.

DL is planning expansion out of LAX, but that might be hindered if they have to share T5 or lost T6 gates, etc.

The never ending saga... Still stuck in court.

However what I can report is that Virgin America will be moving into T-6 this summer, and has leased 3 gates.

I have repeatedly said and DL's exit demonstrates that issues like this often carry on beyond BK court. UA did not settle their LAX issues until after they exited BK and are now one of dozens of airlines filing suit against LAWA because of the rate increases.

I predict DL will be adding flights to Asia from LAX before the lease issues are settled.

DL has been offering airports all over the country (not just LAX) that they owe back rent newly issued stock in the airline in lue of cash for their debts on various leases, not sure if LAWA folks are interested.

Yes you can report that. You could also report that DL will not be moving out of T5

Cool. Will CO and VA rearrange? And how many flights is VA planning if they need 3 gates? That's at least 15 flights a day to use them well...

Well, it looks like they gave up the T6 gates. Either or, but having both the underused T5 and the squatter T6 was appalling for such a constrained airport.

I hope this is the ultimate solution, that DL retreats into T5 and uses it fully, as it's a great terminal. And that T6 can finally be refurbed now that an airline is moving in who wants to create a new, quality image.

As for VA, looks like they are looking at a new CEO to comply with the law, so more power to them!!

I agree. I never liked the gates in T6 for Delta. To me, it was the antithesis of the "Oasis" terminal DL has in T5.

Yes. Altho T6 and refurb? Where have I heard that one before. The only thing T6 has going for it is the outdoor smoking lounge.

Kind of a random question, but what gates did DL operate out of at LAX prior to the Western merger?

3 to 4 gates at T-6.

It is my belief that what has held up T6 refurbishment is the shared nature of the terminal, the way everyone is spread out, etc. Nobody wanted to put in their own money if they had to share the benefit, and if they were stretched out where other airlines would get between them and break up the image...

If they can rearrange it so that:

--CO takes the 5 gates at the front 60-64 (sharing 61 with COPA),
--UA gets the end rotunda 66, 67B, 68A-69B (with 69 available for CO occasional widebody if needed),
--VA gets the middle rotunda 64, 65, 67A sharing them with AeroMexico for their departures.

Then T6 has a nice future. They already have a rebuild security checkpoint.

A makeup like that would encourage airlines to take care of "their area." CO would have 4 gates right near their President's club, VA would have the center rotunda and could put in their own image into those rundown gate areas, and UA could create an "oasis" in the end of the pier since they know it is now completely theirs (other than occasional gate subs). Removing the redundant gate stands for other airlines in that area would open a lot of space

Great plan.

However for now until DL lease situation is clarified, UA will at the loosing end of the T-6 game with Virgin America moving in.

CO and DL have actual leases on the T-6 gates, while UA only has "preferential" use on the gates, which has pretty much given them full time access -- until now.

But now with VA taking up space, UA is really the only one which can be compressed. I dont know what the VA schedule will look like however I'd suspect UA will have some gating issues possibly around the noon rush, and late in the evenings.
