US Seasonal PIT-West Coast Update

In an April 6 "US SEA-PIT Seasonal Service" thread, we were discussing (and trying to figure out) the non-daily summer flights added (and then changed) between PIT and SEA and SAN. I was just looking at schedules on the US site and see that, for the re-introduced service starting ~ 6/4, SEA-PIT is now re-scheduled for 4x weekly (M, Tu, Th, F) and SAN-PIT is down to 2x weekly (Su, We)! Anyone got any further ideas on what the heck the US scheduling department is doing, still changing schedules around so close to their start-date? (And as far as I can tell, there has been no PR about any of this.) Finally, the frequencies don't lend themselves to the theory that the flights are essentially cruise-line or package-deal "charter" op's of some kind, but...

You guys in the Steel City, is US still dinking around with their presence there just to anger people? Or can they just not make up their minds? This is one hell of a way to generate interest in "new" peak-season, long-haul service...

As was discussed in the other thread, first of all, both of these markets could probably support permanent year-round daily n/s. If not that, then they should certainly be able to support daily summer-only service. Why are they even bothering with this kind of minimal stuff? And then, even worse, they can't even decide how to schedule THAT! Very impressive, USAirways Schedule Planning.

BTW, I also noticed that there doesn't seem to be a downloadable PDF Timetable right now on the US site; I got one last month... Anyone? (Think the two topics might be related: US has no idea what their schedule is so why bother publishing a PDF?...)

Well, I am actually no longer in the good ol' steel city anymore, but I am an avid follower of what's goin on aht there. Last week, there was a thread about Colgan Air droping ABE service to be reassigned to PKB or MGW or one of those cities once served by Regions Air for CO in CLE...

At first I was scratching my head, but PIT isn't losing flights in this regard. They're going somewhere else. THey are losing Allentown-Bethlehem though...

They're probably not the ones to ask. I'd say their opinions of US are slightly biased (that's putting it mildly, by the way). This comes back to aircraft utilization. The city pairs should work, so it comes down to where the planes would be best utilized. Maybe that A319 would be better used from Charlotte to the Carribbean. Who knows? Only US revenue management, who I had a chance to work for BTW. They --insist-- on paying below market wages, which is why I'm still posting here.  Wink

I will try to find my US scheduling buddy when I return to work tomorrow and ask him. Other then that, I have not heard anything about what they are doing.

One of the issues they're facing is that lessors are taking back aircraft (to be leased to other airlines at higher rates) as leases come to an end. US Airways' mainline fleet as of March 31 was down by 9 aircraft year-over-year, and that count includes the 5 E190's that had been added.
