WASHINGTON - The Transportation Security Administration has lost a computer hard drive containing Social Security numbers, bank data and payroll information for about 100,000 employees.

Why on earth was this data stored on a portable hard drive!?!? You use those things for backing up music and photos, not top secret data like that. Organizations need to restrict who has direct access to drives containing such data and make sure they are never to be removed from a system or server unless needed to for safe guarding.

I like this quote from the article:

"and said it would fire anyone discovered to have violated the agency's data-protection policies."

Just fire??? I would think that stealing a hard drive containing such data would be a federal offense with 10s of years of prison time. Damn government works get it soooo easy.
