TPA Seeks Better International & West Coast Flight

Interesting note from Ben Mutzabaugh over at "Today in the Sky" at USAToday.com linking an article in the Tampa Bay online paper about the desire for better service: http://www.tbo.com/news/money/MGBK0CF4A1F.html and hiring a marketing consultant for the airport. Tampa Bay (TPA) is seeking a direct flight to SFO for better Asia connection (Is UA interested in such a flight?). Also they would like a flight to San Jose (SJO), Costa Rica (Perhaps an opportunity for DL to try a P2P outside of ATL?). Additionally a flight to Frankfurt (FRA), Germany is desired (Would LH be interested?).
TPA is somewhat one of those "catch-22" airports market wise since MIA isn't far away and AA's big hub there. MCO is just an hour or two away with all of the O&D traffic the Magic Kingdom's big airport obviously draws. To top it off, you have the DL mega-hyb just up the road in ATL. What is a consultant to do with an airport like TPA? scratchchin

There is one of these articles from a Tampa newspaper every 8-12 months. Realisticly, they should be very satisfied with flights to Los Angeles and London. I think Spirit is their best (and only) shot at San Jose (still very unlikely), while Delta Connection or Spirit could fill the Nassau void (which in reality is the only real void, here).

Couldn't TPA just do the study then sell it to every airport out there saying the same thing? Aren't all airports gonna have a report stating how important it is for them to have international service to XXX, YYY, and ZZZ? They could at least make a profit off their study..

TPA just doesn't get the O&D traffic that MCO gets and lacks the hub AA has put into MIA. I'm not certain, but isn't FLL ahead of them in O&D passengers as well as overall passengers? Does the DL flight to SLC (#1035--752) give them the west coast options (including SFO) they want? In addition to the two 738s DL sends from there to LAX?

UA ala TED couldn't fill at least 1 A320 flight a day? A morning departure from Tampa with a red-eye return from SFO???

TPA will very much need to focus on getting business travellers into the city. The revenue generated by a big company (and smaller ones, too) having a long-term contract with an airline to provide travel here in California (Hewlett-Packard and United are HUGE here!) would focus an airline's attention on expansion.

I'd think that would work, but when there isn't even an SFO-FLL flight, I find it hard to believe an SFO-TPA flight will come along.

NK is planning a daily SFO-FLL flight to start in December. Not definite yet, though.

About time. Would work out well I would imagine. I don't know how B6 is doing in the FLL-OAK route, but it's long overdue for SFO to have another SoFla connection.
