How Long Can Iran Air's 747SP Continue Flying?

As Iran Air just in March of this year opened a new route THR-DAM-CCS with 747SP in operation I wonder how long these beasts purchased before the Islamic revolution in 1979 remain airworthy. They must be high-time airframes? I am going on the THR-DAM-CCS route next week and wonder if you have any ideas  Smile

Iran Air operated up to 4 B747SP.

2 are now still operated : EP-IAD and now EP-IAB back in service after a D-Check and two years without flying.
At least this one will be still around, hopefully, for a few more years though It was delivered to Iran Air in May 1976, so just 31 years ago ! They may be "old" in years but maybe not that much in hours of flight, as IR never really used them intensively.

The age of an aircraft does not matter; instead, it's how they are maintained. For example, a ten-year-old aircraft might be extremely badly maintained, whereas an ancient DC3 might be perfectly maintained. It's all about how well they are maintained, and not about their ages. Of course, this does not consider things like operational efficiencies, environmental impact, etc.

True but this unfortunate airline has a harder time maintaining its aircraft because of pointless sanctions. They should be allowed buy new aircraft.

Safety is, of course, paramount.

The point is a lot of people wrongly believe that old aircraft - even if they're ancient, like the DC3 - are less safe because of their age, but so long as they're properly maintained, they can be as safe and even more safe than considerably newer aircraft, depending, of course, on how they are maintained. It is wrong to say that old aircraft automatically equals less safe aircraft. Sadly a lot of people don't understand that.
