My sis-in-law is thinking of moving from Dubai to Perth - but her husband's business will take him to Shanghai a lot. I was shocked to find that despite the mineral boom in WA there are no direct flights from there to PVG. Anyone got wind of maybe China Eastern starting something soon?

It is surprising, but the ties between Aussie and PVG are pretty poor. AFAIK there is only one daily SYD flight flown by MU. Not sure about MEL. All others go via HKG.

China Eastern does indeed fly to MEL, about 4 times a week, PVG-MEL-SYD-PVG, during peak times extra flights are mounted that operate PVG-MEL-PVG. I think Air China also routes some of its Beijing-MEL/SYD flights via PVG if I am not mistaken.
10 years ago China Eastern were being encouraged by the WA government to operate a weekly service to PER. Talk was of an MD11 service. However nothing ever came of that.
I think in this day, China Eastern could make a twice weekly A340 service work from Perth. They market is growing across all segments. It would also be the only Perth-China link as well. Probably worth a shot.

Yup, not a lot to choose from.. If you can get a flight to Hong Kong you'll find loads of connecting flights from there, which would work, even if it's not ideal.
I'd do CX170 PER-HKG and then HKG-PVG on one of the multiple flights/day. This is 4 days a week service, IIRC. Takes 22 hours aprox, inc. changes.
Strangely, if he takes 3 legs, it'll be quicker for him; about 18 hours

Has the guy been using the (fairly) new Dubai - Shanghai route on EK?
