Wow. MLB looks to be getting a once weekly 330 from Berlin:

M-Touristik AG of Rostock, Germany said its agreement with LTU International Airways calls for flights on a 320-seat Airbus 330 to begin Nov. 4 and continue weekly for 26 weeks.

Good for Berlin to see some more longhaul flights -even if this is just a charter flight !!

Call me a skeptic, but what for? What kind of market is there supposed to be at or around MLB that warrants a weekly flight to Berlin?

The question now is, when is MLB going to get a new airline? I live there and I'm tired of only having delta!

Uncrowded beaches? Close to Orlando? Got a great deal from the Airport?
I do not know.

It is a charter flight so the risk is on M-Touristik to get passengers for that flight. Maybe they figure that now AB can be a feeder for LTU in TXL and Florida is still a popular vacation spot for German tourists.

Hmm, the sight of an A330 coming into MLB might result in traffic stopping on the causeways!

This is very interesting news. Well done Melbourne!

What the hell? MLB? Why not MCO? or even Orlando Sanford International? This is probably one of the worst moves LTU has made IMO.

Why?
If the flights are guaranteed revenue by the tour operator (M-Touristik AG) ....what has LTU got to lose?

Considering the airport authority paid out a good amount of money a while back to some company just to market MLB as a destination, this is a win in my opinion, as the money did not go to waste.

Highway 192 heads right to Disney, plus we have the beaches, plus the Airport Authority gave the the charter company some coin.

But yeah, a 330 into MLB. I about pee my pants when J-Stars has a 707 around.

MLB not only has some great beches (Cocoa beach being among one of my favorites) but it also has the KSC visitors center to the north which is one fo the large toruist attractions on the east coast of florida. I flew out fo there on USAIR once (before thy dropped it) and found it to be a very nice terminal with a floor that gradually sloops up to the gate areas (so there is no need for escalators, elevators, or stairs).

I recently flew out of MLB and it is a breeze to fly out of as a passenger, took me 2 minutes to be on the security line and 5 minutes to be on the plane.

Its gonna be interesting seeing the A330 and me being in a little arrow doing flight training, can you say caution wake turbulence!

Any idea on schedule?

LTU hasnothing to lose. This isn't an "LTU move." If anybody loses money, it will be M-Touristik AG. LTU is guaranteed to make money on this, no questions asked.

I was floored to find out today that NASA/KSC charges $51 per person ($41 for under-11's) to see a shuttle launch from the NASA causeway.

The full story:

Melbourne International is spending $500,000 to get the charter flights, as well as waiving an estimated $115,000 in fees and charges for a year.

Figuring conservatively on 200 passengers a week from Germany to Melbourne for the November through April period, Ennis estimated that at least $6 million would be injected into the local economy in the first season alone.

Does anyone know if M-Touristik AG is also planning tourist packages that will include hotels and trips to KSC? I'm not sure what tourist will do in Melbourne during the winter. You might get some nice beach days, but the water will be cold.

Oh, I am sure they will include KSC in some fashion. Disney day trips will also be incorporated. Fishing, surfing, etc. Casino boat out of the Cape. Maybe some of the tourists will grab a cruise also.

I just want to be a baggage handler for these flights.

I've viewed several launches. Used to be one of the good things about living on the Space Coast.

But I think Osama is just an excuse - they could charge a "parking fee" of something reasonable, like $5 or even $10 and provide the bus if Osama really was the problem. Instead they charge like it's Disney, to see stuff our tax dollars have long ago already paid for.

Quoting Mir (Reply 20):

Yes, I know, but the NASA causeway is one of the better spots.

I don't think it's right to charge theme park prices for something that is already paid for by the tax-payers. A nominal fee to cover expenses, sure, but this is ridiculous.
