Having read various blogs here and elsewhere I am at a loss to see the potential and obvious benefit of carriers with the exception of BA/AA of transferring from Gatwick to Heathrow.

A rhetorical cry of better/huge connection opportunities for part of the reasoning but for Northwest and Delta this surely is so wide of the mark why route ANY connecting traffic over London (On to the competition!) when their alliance partners Euro Hubs are Amsterdam and Paris.
So London traffic on these must be mostly O & D and so what if you fly into Gatwick it’s a good enough airport and is just as good if not BETTER for onward ground transport.
Getting into the city is a SINGLE train service on Thameslink.
The M23/M25 are NOT that bad hell go the wrong way round if going north it will cost you at Dartford but might actually be quicker !
Oh AND it does have a better range of UK domestic services for these O & D travellers to see the beauty of these isles.

For Star United they are already at Heathrow if somewhat diminished over recent years and clearly their focus for connecting Traffic must be Frankfurt (BMI feed just doesn’t cut it beyond domestically as a network)

Continental I can see want some presence at Heathrow for the high end (other peoples money) service to Houston and may be a Newark service or three going forward.

As for the travelling public what benefits will we see?
Lower fares may be in Club and upper to New York as Delta/Continental slog it out to win some corporation accounts perhaps (But why fight when in same alliance?)
Y or similar steerage a few more offers in February to fill the seats !

After the first one or two seasons what level of seats (increase/decrease) will actually be available out of London as a whole airport network?

Discuss!

At the end of the day, Americans are obsessed with Heathrow.
It sounds good, it's got "big" appeal.

For this reason passengers think london, think Heathrow.

The airlines are merely reacting to this demand.

it's the same in the UK, British people think New York, think JFK.
Most brits have never heard of La Guardia and wouldnt even consider flying to Newark... thats why BA has 9x daily to JFK and 1 or 2 to Newark

So far in 2008 45 flights and Gold already. JFK, IAD, LGA, SIN, HKG, NRT, AKL, PPT, LAX still to book ! Home Airport LCY
