Lufthansa 747 Engines?

Guys,

What brand of engines did Lufthansa used in the 747-100 and 747-200 fleet?

Looking at the pictures, those from the 100 series look to different from those in the 200 series.

-200s had GEs

I bought an old Revell kit and the engines on the box art and description are the GE's and in the box we have, what I now know PW's.

So their three 747-100s had PW as did their first three -200s. Thereafter it was GE all the way.

(But note how LH have ordered their 747s in tiny numbers - until the 747-8!)

This is the first time I ever heard about LH ordering a Pratt powered 747-200s and one -200 Freighter, and the Freighter order was in 1969 (wasn't the 747 Freighter with the nose cargo door (not the conversion model) launched some time in the mid to late 70's?). I know the -100s have had Pratts (well, they had no other choice), but I thought all freighters were GE powered. Did this order ever get changed? I doubt LH would have been willing to operate one "orphan" Pratt powered 747 Freighter.

That's true, as LH Technik maintains about every single (western) engine type and airframe in the 100+ seat market there is anyway ....

"Jein" (as you might say!). What you see here is LH switching to GE from PW in 1970. They had already ordered DC-10s with the CF6 and, I guess, wanted to standardise on that. Thereafter LH didn't order a single widebody (Airbus or Boeing) without CF6s until they chose RR Trents for their A330s. (Their A343 and A346s didn't come with an engine choice.) In other words, for more than thirty years LH chose the GE CF6 on every application they could: The 747-200, 747-400, DC-10, A300, A310, MD-11.

I'd say "engine commonality" was a factor in three decades of airliner purchases!  Wink

And don't forget P&W was the only engine available on the 747-100. Several carriers that operated the -100 and early -200s when only P&W was available switched to GE on later 747-200s.

KL and AF are one of those. Their first aircraft were all Pratt powered, although AF had operated the -100 as well, while subsequent deliveres were all GE engined.
