Latest round of cuts come following announced lay off's of 230 positions in December.

Hawaiian Airlines Lays Off 98 Workers, Aims to Save $4 Million Annually


HONOLULU (AP) -- Hawaiian Airlines laid off 98 nonunion employees Thursday as part of an effort to cut $4 million from its annual budget. The company also won't fill 38 vacant positions to save money, the company said in a news release.

The move comes as Hawaiian faces soaring fuel prices and increased competition from go!, the new interisland market entrant run by Phoenix-based Mesa Airlines.

"This decision was difficult and painful and not taken lightly," Mark Dunkerley, Hawaiian's president, said in a statement. "This is in no way a reflection on the individuals whose positions are affected. We appreciate all they have done for our company."

Earlier this month, Hawaiian Airlines reported an $11.9 million loss for the January-March period.

All three major interisland carriers posted multimillion dollar losses in recent quarters as they compete with each other by offering passengers low fares.

So essentialy this is a race to the bottom? They are waiting for the first one to go bankrupt? Or until mesa has had enough with the losses? Strange situation...  scratchchin

No they weren't. They are "new." The outsourcing of accounting, IT and reservations was announced, all those workers are union and are protected by an agreement that allows them to transfer to other jobs at HA (mostly at HNL Station) or receive a severance package.

The elimination of management and non union positions is news, and was first announced yesterday (5/24).

I just hope the Go! lawsuit is a success and Mesa is sent packing. They are obviously selling tickets at a loss for 25 bucks on high CASM RJ's. I just flew from Kaua'i to HNL literally with 3 hours notice and bought a 25 dollar ticket on HA for the flight. I would have gladly paid more since I think HA is a great airline. Mesa continues to be a cancer on the Hawaiian market.

I always hate hearing of people losing their jobs, as I was one of them for three years on furlough. But this particular cutback was probably necessary, and doesn't bother me as much as the unknown of having our res system run from offshore. Management says there will not be a problem with he new service, but I'm withholding my vote of confidence until I hear from our customers.

Management is full of crap.

Have them read Civ-Av here, and then ask them - based on the hundreds of threads herein with the horror stories passengers write about regarding outsourced res centers - if they maintain "there won't be a problem". Management is blowing smoke up someones  butthead .

Nothing stopped you from paying more for your ticket as a magnanimous gesture.....since you seem so concerned. HA could have easily accepted an extra $100 as miscellaneous revenue. Put your money where your concern is. Otherwise, just enjoy the bargain and the stupidity of airline executives.

HA and AQ will always perform with mediocre results as the history of their market has always been this way.
They both really need to see about doing some mainland lift on some underserved point to point runs to diversify their
revenue stream and not be so reliant on the Hawaiian market. Of couse that would require some mainland based planes, but I cannot see any real growth in their markets as they take on more competition and are pretty much reliant on revenues associated with lift to and from Hawaii. (the South Pacific operations are a minute part of their systems)
Their market planning departments and growth strategists are underserving their investors if their mantra is to wholly eveolve around services to and within Hawaii

I work with someone who has been with HA part time for 4 years who was an interperter, and CSA. She was laid off yesterday as the interpeters fall under "management" and arent union. She took it quite hard and as a shock.

Actually I did, I had a ticket for later in the day for 39 dollars, I went online to change the ticket and saw that the 25 dollar fare was available so I just bought a new ticket.

When I got to LIH the agent told me "we would have put you on standby and given you a seat for free". I told her I was happy to buy a new ticket since they needed the money and they are a great airline.

Sorry to hear that. Layoffs in this industry are so often these days. I am sorry for those at HA that face these cuts. It is indeed a tough industry, and I hope those affected are able to find work quick.

This is IT, not res, being outsourced to India. Res is already in the process of being outsourced to the Philippines, which from early indications on FlyerTalk, may not be much better. Time to start flying Aloha I guess...

Quite the opposite, it's very expensive to do business there and to live there, but the pay is less than the main land. They call it the "Paradise tax".
