I thought it was just a refuel stopover while flying the Cape Town-Atlanta run.

SAA used to operate FLL as a refuelling stop, but they now have switched over to POS (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad) because of the better traffic they get of South African cricket players trying to escape after being exposed in the match fixing scandals.

I never saw a SAA aircraft in FLL, and I'm there quite often. I know, they fly out of MIA.

saa flies 2 fort lauderdale , i think thrice per week westbound, east bound they dont stop in F L . they stop in F L because there r loads of south africans going to disney world which is aparently nearer 2 F L that miami. they also dropped miami because aa was their partner in miami. they switched to delta & now they fly to atlanta daily. saa is also flying JNB lagos new york soon as well as their daily JFK - JNB non stop

I think the route is also flown via CPT. I flew the route to MIA last year, and most of the passengers boarded the flight at CPT. As Saa said, they moved to Atlanta because they dropped their codeshare with AA, and whilst I prefer AA over DL, I think it was a stupid move as you have to fly back if you want to go to MIA. When I drove past FLL last year when I was driving from Disney World to Miami, it didn't seem like such a big airport. You wouldn't think an African carrier would fly a 744 there!

Tons of South Africans in south Florida. In fact largest population of South Africans outside of S.A. is between Miami and Boca Raton, FL. They stop 3 times weekly on the way to ATL. Also, SAA's US office is in Fort Lauderdale, not too far from my old high school actually!

The SAA flight is a code-share with Delta. I was on the Delta leg from ATL - FLL, and that's where I learned that this flight is known as I think SAA7057.

It was operated ATL-FLL on a DL L-1011
