Special Fares On Expedia

Hello everyone. I am in the process of booking a flight through Expedia.com They have the best deal for my itinerary, almost half of the price that's being offered for the same flights elsewhere. However, right next to each flight, it says "Special Fare." However, it lists these rules on the bottom of the page:

This is a special fare with restrictions.
Tickets are nonrefundable, nontransferable, and cannot be canceled or changed.
Flights do not qualify for upgrades and are ineligible for frequent flyer miles.
Travelers cannot fly standby on other flights.


That kind of gotten me a little upset that I wouldn't be able to collect any miles. Does anyone know what exactly a special fare is and how it works? Will I be able to at least choose my own seats?

This happened to me once with UA when I was booking on Expedia. I booked it, then at the check in desk, I gave the guy my Mileage Card and he swiped it and the miles got in my account. I think it may be a glitch in the system.

Several airlines no longer give miles on the cheapest classes of service - others only give partial miles. This includes some fares purchased directly from the airline. The problem is most people do not know what class a booking is made in till it is too late.

Also, a handful of airlines (like BA and AC) do not let you pre-assign seats in the cheapest transcon classes.

You mean a glitch in the Expedia system or United's? The flight I'm looking at is SK and I was hoping I could accumulate my Mileage Plus miles. Should I even bother? It's over 8,000 miles round trip.

Seat assignments are never guaranteed. However, most pre-assigned seats are honored. If you buy 4 seats in a class that do not allow seat assignments, there is a good chance that if the plane is full you will have 4 seats that are not next to each other. Also, if you do want 4 coach seats, you should call in your reservation instead of booking online as multiple seats under one name will be cancelled unless entered in a special format - this is standard practice at all carriers to prevent duplicate bookings.

The thing is that the online fare through Expedia.com is about $700 cheaper per ticket than sold by airline themselves. Buying 4 tickets online saves my family almost $3,000 which is a big deal. You can even buy a car for that much.

Are airline miles, which are at best very difficult to redeem really worth shelling out an additional $3000? Put another way, since the only miles you yourself can collect would be on your ticket, how many miles would you be getting? If we assume miles are worth about$0.02 each, wouldn't it still pay for you to use expedia?

And finally, have you checked your route on kayak.com or with a consolidator? You might save even more than using expedia, and still pull in your miles. And save your boarding pass!!! You may still be able to claim the miles later.

Airline miles are addicting, believe me, I know. It is really, really tough switching over to AirTran domestically if DL/CO/NW are flying the same route... Good luck, and have a safe trip.

A couple thousand miles is not worth $3000 since it is so hard to redeam miles anyway. I would book with Expedia (which should allow you to assign seats if allowed).

It would probably be in their best interest to do so, as they'd make more money on a direct sale than through a third party internet sale.

What's the problem? You can get the miles and pay twice as much for the tickets. They posted the conditions of the fare, and you as the consumer either agree to the terms or buy a much more expensive fare. It's your choice.

Some weeks ago, I called AF to report that. I said that I was quite socked to find something really cheaper on Expedia. The agent told me that it is totally possible, as Expedia secure seats block on really cheap class of reservations. And as far as AF doesn’t have a "Best Price" agreement, there is nothing you can do about that.

Back on the topic, that’s more often the case. No miles or just a portion, for example 25%. You can check the actual gain before reservation on AF web site with a single click, or exampl.

Thanks for all of the replies. I've booked through Expedia for the end of August so a trip report will follow once I return.

Another questions I have though, I've read on the internet numerous complaints about how Expedia lost people's reservations. Is it a real problem or just a few isolated cases? I always booked my tickets with the airline direct and this is the first time I used Expedia.

I'm flying SK and BT EWR-ARN-RIX-ARN-EWR. I was able to select seats for the 2 SK flights but not the BT. Will have to wait and see if I can accumulate any Mileage Plus miles.

I have used Expedia many times without problem. The only thing I have noticed is sometimes they are a little slow to let you know if your flight times have changed. Especially on DL since for some reason they change their flight times a hundred times. However, being aviation nuts I am sure you will be keeping track of that on your own.

Hi!

I work for Expedia so can help you here. Firstly, an ESF (Expedia Special Fare) is where we buy a block of seats on a given route and because we set the Fare Rules can offer it much lower than the airline......but, they generally are more restricted than the airline's own rules and are primarily designed for travellers who do not need a lot of flexibility. As for collecting miles, this is entirely up to airline involved with regard to which classes they permit miles to be allocated to, and is not an Expedia decision. Likewise with seat assignments......some airlines allow them, some don't.
Expedia do not 'lose' anyone's reservations....they immediately go into a GDS and an airline locator reference is immediately generated. The very odd glitch does happen from time to time in any GDS and can happen to any airline.....it's rare, but can happen.

Not correct at all, and quite misleading. That will certainly, and only, happen if one books say four names exactly the same (i.e. with both the same given name and surname). However, if the given names are different then that is recognised by any GDS as four separate bookings. There is no separate 'format' required and absolutely no need whatever to book with any airline directly in such a case.

Always check with the airline to reconfirm your reservation right after you purchase and then again 48 hours or so before you fly. The biggest issue we see at the airport is that the online travel agencies rarely notify you in case of schedule changes. When it is 5 minutes one way or the other it doesn't matter, but when a flight is moved by an hour or discontinued altogether it can be a big inconvenience. Especially if you are not flying until the end of August, there is plenty of time for a schedule change in there.

The other thing we see, which is usually a much bigger problem with Travelocity than Expedia, is passengers who show up at the counter with unpaid reservations or paper ticketed reservations but no tickets. For whatever reason the form of payment didn't pass correctly from their GDS to our res system and they ignored the automatic response that the seats would be canceled without payment. Another reason to always check with the airline directly right after you purchase and a week or so before you fly. Or save yourself the hassle and book with the airline directly in the first place.
