In the 80s I only remember TWA having one 747 coming into LAX, and that was the flight from LHR. I know a lot of TWA flight between LAX and JFK was L1011s, but I was just wondering if they had a regular 747 flight on LAX-JFK route during the 80s. If not, did TWA use any A/C other than L1011 on the LAX-JFK run during the 80s?

The 8am morning LAX-JFK (TW840 if I remember) was almost always a B747.
In addition for a long while (after sale of LHR routes) a 10am'ish LAX-STL-LGW operated using a B747.

I flew TWA flight 840 LAX-JFK in August, 1987.
I booked this flight specifically to fly on a 747.
Pan Am also offered 747 LAX-JFK until its demise.

My wife and I flew on a TWA 747 from JFK-LAX in April 1986. We connected to Air New Zealand 747 to AKL via HNL. We went to see Halley's Comet as is was not very visible from the northern hemisphere. The trip included stays in CHC, MEL, SYD, and NAN. The return flight from LAX was on a TWA L-1011.

The LAX-JFK flight was 840 and the JFK-LAX flight was 847. That was also the flight number of the hijacked TWA in Athens. After being flown to Beirut, USN diver Robert Dean Stetham was beaten and killed by terrorists on June 14, 1985. His body was dumped on the tarmac.

Wrong. The hijacked TWA flight in June 1985 was TWA Flight 847, operating CAI-ATH-FCO.
A bomb exploded aboard a TWA 727-200 operating FCO-ATH a year later. This was TWA 840.

IIRC, in the mid 70's, AA, UA and TW each offered at least one 747 daily to LAX.

Quoting Quickmover (Reply 7): I believe they flew 747s on STL-LAX as well.
Yes. After the Heathrow deal with AA, TW 720/721 routed LAX-STL-LGW-STL-LAX with a 747.
IIRC, TW08, LAX-JFK that departed around 4:00PM was operated with a 74L for a few years too.

When I was in the Army in Germany I went home in March of '88. I flew TWA FRA-JFK-LAX and LAX-JFK-FRA, all the flights were on 747s.

I can remember as late as 1996 TWA operating the 747's to the West Coast.
MXP-JFK-SFO 842/843
?-JFK-LAX 840/841
The summer of 1996 was the rebirth, and the death of TWA. I can recall reading a article in TWA in-flight magazine in early 1996 enroute JFK-MXP on the 767-200. The article was that there was a big summer ahead for TWA and that Europe was going to be almost all 747's. In fact I remember flying one month and a day after 800. It was a 747-100 "Star of Madrid" it arrived from SFO (late-a TWA trademark), and was going to transport us to Malpensa. That was a great summer until that horrible night in July.
