Why Lockheed Did Not Keep Working On The A380?

After the lunch of the Airbus A380 in 2000, Lockheed was looking into working with Airbus on the A380. For some reason this agreement did not go though. I think the A380 is a good plane, but a little help from Lockheed would have made better airliner. Also it could have help the US accept the A380 better. So why Lockheed did not help Airbus?

PS: This is not a slam on Airbus. Since I think they did a pretty good job on the A380, I just think Lockheed has a golden touch.
