We're thinking of flying to GUA in December on NK from LAX. How are the loads so far for the new flights? I'm a little hesitant to buy the tickets if there is any chance the nonstop might be pulled before then.

From what I understand every single seat has been full the first few weeks, however much of this was result of the crazy $.08 fares they were offering.

However the normal fare is in the mid $200's (which is also very cheap) which are being matched by others.

Personally I'd just go with TACA or United for the same fare where one at least gets to check bags for free and at the very least a soda on board for free if not a meal.

Laxintl,

Are they departing out of Terminal 3 and arriving into TBIT for this flight?

What is it? It's A 747-400, but that's not important right now.

Pretty sure they arrive at remotes for Customs. The a/c is towed to Terminal 3 for departure.

I took the inaugural flight down on May 10. The flight was completely full, including several Spirit execs and Guatemalan consuls, etc. The return on May 14, however, was maybe a third full. Several friends and co-workers have taken the flight as well and reported less-than-full load factors.

The good news is that the people of Guatemala are really excited about Spirit's arrival. Lots of people asked us why this group of white, American college-aged kids was there and when we told them we found 16-cent fares on Spirit, they said that they had heard of them and were hoping this would encourage all airlines to drive down fares. Although many people said they were excited about trying the product, we'll see if that translates to actual ticket sales. But kudos to the marketing people who did their job well!

And yes, CXB744, we arrived at a hard stand way at the end of the LAX airport property because all gates at TBIT are full that time of night. Pax are bused to TBIT for customs and the plane is immediately towed to T3 for departure about 1.5 hours later.

I just flew AS240 LAX-MEX (red-eye) which departed from T3 Gate 33B and NK LAX-GUA was leaving from T3 Gate 36. I was surprised to see NK operating that route, which I first thought was a charter but when I asked a Spirit Agent, she told me they started the route almost 20 days ago and that loads from LAX were good. The only problem was that people started complaining about the fees for each checked bag, since they come with huge boxes and cases and expect to take them for free. Other problem they have are no-shows, since people don't understand or travel agencies fail to explain that their flight departs past midnight and they have to be at the airport the day before...

I lived in Guatemala for six years from 1990-1996 and found the Guatemalan people to be just as you described. When I traveled into the indigenous areas, everyone greeted one aother on the streets.

Congratulations to NK! I hope this works out for you. I have to admit I was very surprised you started service from LAX to GUA. In fact I thought it was a typo or something.
Are you using 319s or 321s on the flights? Are they daily?
Is there an "enhanced" inflight catering and service to GUA since TA has re-instituted full catering in the main cabin on all of their flights to Central America?

No "enhanced" catering besides from what I understand to be free sodas thru mid-June. Otherwise people will have to pay for snacks or other drinks.

Biggest issue to date I understand is baggage. NK charges for each checked bag unlike others which allow for 2 free pieces (occasionally promotions for 3rd free piece also). Besides the per piece charge NK is strictly enforcing the weight/size policy which can cause each bag to cost upwards of $150. As you can imagine this makes for some surprised and upset passengers as Central American's dont travel light!

I suspect NK is currently making more on baggage fee's then the passenger ticket. Off course I'm sure news of the baggage charge will spread within the ethnic community including the ever important travel consolidators so it will be interesting to see how things are several months from now if other carriers continue matching NKs base $200 fares while offering a much more generous baggage allotment.
