I was listening to liveatc feed for KEWR and i was hearing this "Departures are forbidden until the VIP has cleared the area", who is this VIP and why has one of the busiest airports been essentially shut down for upto and hour for departures?

From fly.faa.gov:

Due to OTHER/VIP MOVEMENT, there is a Traffic Management Program in effect for traffic arriving Newark International Airport, Newark, NJ (EWR). This is causing some arriving flights to be delayed an average of 44 minutes.

There may be a few diplomats in town. Traffic in Manhattan has been a nightmare all day.

It's POTUS who is causing all the delays. AOPA had an alert on their website yesterday about this. Airspace restrictions from 4:35 pm to about 7:40 pm today

Diplomats?!? I think more along the lines of dictators, presidents, etc. If every diplomat created this kind of effect, they're would never be any flights in or out of the NYC area.

Along those lines, why can't the US Prez take Marine One to NYC when he visits the UN? Why does he have to cause a huge mess and tie up traffic all the way from JFK to Manhattan?

Because it's not at EWR? Because he may have multiple stops to make? Because it's wasteful? No, can't be the last one...  Wink

Nothing like sitting at the Lincoln Tunnel and the Turnpike while he comes through. You can have dinner and read a novel in that mess.

They would have to fly one of those choppers up here. I'm sure Marine One has flares, missle avoidence devices etc. Can't throw the president in a news copter and fly him over now can we.

They used to fly the presidents into Kennedy. I guess it is easier for them to protect him coming from Newark.

They still do. It totally depends on where he is going. Just a few months ago, Bush spoke at the Merchant Marine Academy I believe and flew into JFK.

I was at LGA when Air Force II arrived in March; we were delayed for a few minutes until Cheney's motorcade left the airport. Then there was a mad dash to the runway--We were something like #15 by the time we got there.

He does. I remember one time when Clinton was in town in 1997 or 1998 and they shut down the entire Belt Parkway Westbound...But I don't believe Bush has ever motorcaded from JFK/EWR into the city (perhaps it is a post 9/11 thing). Every time I've heard about him coming to New York, it has been on Air Force I to JFK/EWR (or even McGuire AFB in New Jersey) and then Marine One for the rest of the journey to Manhattan.

I assume it does, but Marine One usually flies with a few other choppers so that it is impossible to know which one the president is on.

He should make everyone's life easier and just fly all the way from DC in Marine One. Don't tell me his choppers don't have the range to make it...

He's not going to Manhattan, he's going to a convention center in Edison NJ

My North Jersey Coast line NJ Transit train coming home from Manhattan was delayed 25-30 minutes because President Bush's motorcade was driving down the Turnpike as we were about to cross over, I can understand blocking traffic for the President to drive past if your in a car. But was it necessary for the Secret Service to delay my train home, I was on a Express train that would have passed over the Turnpike doing about 65 MPH at that spot when the President passed.

I knew something was up when I landed at EWR last night at about 7:20 and there was a McGuire AFB C-17 and what I believed to be a untitled Navy or Air Force C-40 parked on the hard stand in front of Terminal C.

This reminds me of the time in 2000 when then Vice President Al Gore drove in a motorcade to a Democratic Fund Raiser being held at Jon Bon Jovi's house off River Road in Navasink section of Middletown NJ, they shut down the Parkway to let the Vice President (Presidential Candidate) drive by.

Both today's incident with Bush and Al Gore's trip in 2000 caused significant delays during RUSH HOUR of all times, not a great way to gain support from voters. Take the Helicopter, and let the daily commuters get home in time for Dinner and Hard Ball.

The VIP was this country's "leader" and the airport has been shut down because he's paranoid someone might try to hurt him. He only cares about himself getting hurt and not the thousands of innocent Americans, Iraqis and Afghans that have been killed because of his actions.

They should have helicoptered him to Edison from McGuire, or he should have used a smaller aircraft and been able to fly into MMU.

No. Laura Bush was in NYC yesterday:

I guess she went into Manhattan while her husband did whatever he was doing in Edison.

Ouch. Imagine what it is like when he is staying in a hotel in Manhattan somewhere...I imagine they just block off a large circle around wherever he is...

Yeah, um, whatever......

Regardless of your personal feelings about him, he is the POTUS. Clinton, Bush Sr. Reagan, Carter, etc. all received the same treatment.

And it's a huge PITA whenever the POTUS, any one of them, comes to the NYC area (or anywhere else). Reply 12 about stopping the train is an example of the crazy things the SS does to make everyone's lives a little more difficult. Can't the motorcade slow down for the train to miss it by 10 seconds or so?

As I said before, they should just helicopter him out of the White House.

Oh Brother... The same thing used to happen when Clinton would arrive at EWR. Give it a rest already.

Ya.... Bush is the ONLY one that has caused these issues  Yeah sure Its Secret Service SOP, not in any control by the POTUS or any other USSS protected individual.

Seems that people can only remember the current administration and seem to "forget" past administrations.

Also for the original poster... Newark always has some sort of delay, especially after 2:30pm .... the reason depends on what part of the dart board the dart lands... Wind, Enroute Weather, Volume, Extreme Sunniness, something.
