I laughed when I saw this article in the NY Times today, because there were a million cars trying to pick up passengers in the arrivals area of jetBlue's Terminal 6 last night when I arrived at JFK.
It's nice to see the PANYNJ using innovative methods though...
The art of picking up people at the airport rests partly on dodging traffic police and feigning ignorance when caught waiting in no-parking zones.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey wants to put an end to that cat-and-mouse game. Last Friday, it opened a new parking lot at Kennedy International Airport where drivers can wait free until they get a call to come pick up their passengers.
“Air travel can be a trying experience,” said Pasquale DiFulco, a spokesman for the Port Authority, which owns and runs Kennedy, Newark Liberty and LaGuardia airports. “The countless hours circling, not to mention with the price of fuel these days, it could wind up costing you a lot of time and money in wasted gas. And it’s not very eco-friendly either.”
The Port Authority has no plans to open similar lots at Newark and LaGuardia because there is no available space at those airports.
The cellphone lot at Kennedy is one of several measures announced yesterday by the Port Authority aimed at improving its customer service. The agency will add 200 workers to help travelers at the airports, in AirTrain stations and other facilities; provide valet parking at Kennedy; and offer flight status reports for people with smart phones.
With 250 spots, the cellphone lot makes up just a fraction of the 16,500 parking spaces at Kennedy. It is on the edge of the airport, near the old Tower Air terminal, several minutes’ drive from the main terminals.

There has been a cellphone waiting area at SJC for at least a year now. I'm sure that many other airports already have them too. Not too innovative any more.

I love it...especially how bad "traffic control" is at the pickup location..it sometimes seems as if they don't want to let the vehicle pick the pax up from arrivals, forget about sitting there for a minute or two...

I kind of like that idea. Everytime I pick somenoe up from LAX I always end up exchanging words with those damn annoying security cards with their flashlights...

The one in SEA has been open for a while as well. It sucks though that they put it by the old FF terminal. It is basically in the middle of no where and if anyone knows JFK then they know that it can be a 6-8 minute drive sometime. My prediction is 95% of the people won't use it until it is put in a more central area.

I think it is at a good location at JFK actually. From there, you can be at any terminal in under five minutes. There are few other locations that offer such access.

Agreed. I know that i'll use it. It'll make pickups, particularly at the JetBlue terminal, a hell of a lot easier.
I just hope that it doesn't become consumed by livery cabs. I often see them sitting on the side of the road waiting for phone calls.

Yeah, the last time I was at JFK, I was waiting inside terminal 4 for my wife to pick me up because it was approximately zero degrees Fahrenheit outside. I was literally standing *at* the door. As soon as I saw her drive up, I walked outside to the car - this was maybe a 50 foot walk, if that. *As I was walking*, I see a PA guy knock on my car window to tell my wife she can't stop there. This was *in* the marked passenger pickup area, mind you, and there were not even any other cars around! (It was an off-peak time.)
I got to the car and hear him saying through the car window "you can't stop here unless you're picking up a passenger" to which I replied "yes, she's picking me up." He replied "but you can't stop here unless the passenger is here." To which I again replied, "well, then where am I? I think I'm right here."
Those jerks at the PA don't need a lot, they just need to be a little less militant about pickups. Even with the existence of this lot, I'm still not gonna wait outside for that five minutes when it's freezing cold out, meaning I'm still gonna take 10 freakin' seconds to get to the car from the terminal. They need to take a chill pill.

While most enter from the Van Wyck I believe a fair amount come from the Rockaway Tpke area. For those people it is directly on the other side of the terminal. To go so far out of the way may not make sense. The PANYNJ should advertise this heavily, otherwise it will go wasted.

The lot is far out of the way for people coming from Long Island and using the JFK expressway which a bunch of people to. We used to be able to just pullover on the side of the jfk expressway but they put up little orange poles in the huge shoulder area so people can't pullover, now all those cars and taxis and limos are going to be up by the terminals. Stupid move for that area unless they put a lot for JFK Expwy cars since the cell phone lot is way out of the way for us.

You must mean the JFK Expressway. That's a good point, though. Perhaps they could open one in the cargo area as well. That could benefit the folks coming from the eastern side of JFK.

Finally, some sanity. I do hope it works, but I suspect as one poster noted it will be mainly used by limos/black cars, but that will help too. This also make sense from a security point as well saving those picking up someone a lot cheaper and easier. I would recommend that the NYNJPA promotes this new lot and situation.

There is also a cell phone lot at ORD off Zemke Blvd & Mannheim Road before Parking Lot F next to the Metra NCS Stop to Antioch and Chicago, It is frequented at some times. JFK is doing something very smart

JFK Expressway is correct. Is the Varig cargo building being used??? A lot there or right across from the postal facility. It is still a 5 minute drive from the terminals but not directly across the airport for us.
