Here's a link to the GSO News and Record Comair to close Crew base at PTI
Looks like another blow to the GSO airport, can't say I'm suprised as Comair flights have really been cut at GSO.

This should not be really a surpise, OH would be better suited building up crew bases in NYC, CVG, or possibly South Florida.

No surprise here either, although the GSO crews were GREAT. Still, Comair is down to 2 BOS, 5 CVG, 2 LGA and 1 MCO in July, so having a base for 10 daily flights isn't really a great move. CVG and NYC are good choices for bases, and it wouldn't be a surprise if they made BOS a crew base; they seem to run 40 daily flights out of BOS, which I think places them around 3rd or 4th on the largest city areas for Comair (I think ATL is up there as well). Still, makes plenty of sense to reduce costs and only have NYC and CVG as bases though; these make up the vast bulk of the Comair flying, and ATL flights can easily get crews by routing CVG-outpost-ATL, and same for BOS with about 6 daily JFK-BOS Comair flights (plus an E70 and a 737/757).

MCO is closing as well. Rumor has it that BOS and DCA might be opening to replace them, but so far it remains hearsay.

I generally agree with your entire above statement - but having lived in a small market where many DCI aircraft and/or flight crews operated ATL-GRR-CVG or CVG-GRR-ATL in my experiences, those situations had the highest propensity to operate late or with maintenance issues. Just my observation having flown many a DCI flight.

I never really understood why Comair made GSO a crew base. Even at its peak, Comair never really had that many flights at GSO and they really weren't planning on adding a lot of new ones either. I definitely think BOS or DCA would make a little more sense.

Don't they have a MX base there in GSO? If that's the case, maybe they needed the crew base to allow for reserve crews to ferry planes around...etc.

At it's peak, Comair had 3x JFK, 3x LGA, 6x CVG, 2x BOS, 3x MCO, 1x MCO and 1x ATL. Used too operate 17-18 flights regularly; not a whole lot though for a base though. Though Chautauqua has a GSO base, and they had at peak 7x LGA (US), 7x PHL (US), 2-3x IAD (UA), 2x MCO (DL), 1x TPA (DL) - about the same as Comair.

This might have had something to do with it.

Just another straw in the hat for the RDU people that like to point out how GSO sucks.

Nobody points out that GSO sucks,
We just point out that they are not a strategic location for the airlines with their Proximity to RDU and CLT.

Maybe Allegiant and Skybus will change that mentality.

Given how things appear to be going at OH, I wonder if they would have enough people to open a new crew base?
Prehaps they should focus on consolidating their bases to there 2 or 3 biggest markets.
