Hi All,

-How do you think BD will do on its Transatlantic flights?

-If the US flights go ok, do you think BD will begin flights to even 'longer-haul' destinations?

-If they do expand longhaul, do you think larger aircraft (eg.B747s/A340s) will join the fleet? (I know that that's looking a LONG way into the future!)

If their service and pricing is as competitive as they say it will be, then they should do just fine in the long run. I think they should focus on code sharing with united out of heathrow and start more services from the likes of manchester or glasgow, much like continental is doing currently, and making money.
But i hope they dont make the mistake of getting too big too quickly and end up like bcal or dan air to name a few.
The a330-200 is a perfect aircraft, but the proposed 500 series would also be ideal for west coast usa services.
It would be really cool if virgin joined star, this would create truely the best alliance, especialy in heathrow, where ba is far too big.
On a more local note, i heard that bm is planning to move its flights from belfast international to belfast city airport which is only 5 mins away from the city. but i dont know how they expect to land an a320/321 on that tiny runway, but whatever i think its a good idea.

BD should do OK with its transatlantic service since the flights will go from Manchester, which has limited competition, to Star Alliance partner UA's hubs at IAD and ORD. Look for future destinations to be LAX or SFO. They really want to get authority out of LHR, but that depends on if the goverments and BA will open up access, which would mean that many US carriers would flood that airport with competion and likely lower fares.

BD is a good airline with good service, and their record in Europe and UK-domestic is impressive, I just hope that they do not make the mistake of growing too fast and/or illogically that usually results in financial problems. I hope that BD looks back at history and doesnt make the errors that Braniff and others have made when entering new markets.

One thing is 'SQ and NH will not welcome.' Star Alliance has too many members on the Pacific rim, so at least one of them is overviewed to go away the alliance. (And most probable one is TG.)

If VS joins and BD and VS operate together, it will be OK, but just must be aware of BA. There is obvious probablity that 'Virgin against BA' round 2 occurs.

I think an alliance with VS would be very good for BD. (on VS's website BD is included as one of VS's allies, I guess as they bring people to London for their flights with Virgin).
I think that BD should apply for destinations that VS doesn't serve, thus giving the two airlines (in an alliance) even bigger route networks. Do you think that would work? I think it would as both airlines have very good reputations in Europe and in the US (VS).

bd and vs all the way, they could bring down ba!!!! as you can guess i have issues about ba!
but it is definatly better to work in an alliance and offer a larger number of destinations rather than competing with eachother.
unfortunatly i imagine any such alliance would be stopped by ba, its a bit unfair considering the ba/aa code share fell through.
by the way, i never see you(englandair)getting involved in any boeing vs airbus wars, do you think bd should have bought the 320/321/330, i think they look great in the current sceme and they are really nice to fly on, but i was kinda disappointed not to see the next gen 737`s or the 777 in their fleet. i must have flown the 737-400`s about a million times on the shuttle service to belfast, i miss them already.

i think BD will do great and i really hope that they do start serving furthur destinations but i dont want them to develop too quickley as they could go down hill if they do that.
also why do people expect that MAN, LHR and Glasgow are the airports that BD should serve from. what happened to the home of BD, EAST MIDLANDS AIRPORT. they have got the 6th longest runway in the country and the only airlines that are use it for flights to America is AIR2000 (AMM) for PAX flights

Although I'm realy happy that BD are going transatlantic, I agree with you.
B777s would have (& this probably seems stupid) made BD seem a more serious transatlantic competator. For example, although US Airways offer scheduled flights between England & the US, I personally don't think of them as a propper transatlantic carrier probably because their a/c are smaller!

However I don't like the stretched B737 types or the shape of their tails, so i'm glad they've gone with Airbus shorthall!

Do you think, as larger carriers begin to phase them out in favor of even bigger planes, BD will begin operating B744s? To see a VS B767 & BD 744 would make my year!

British Midland are to have 3 classes on their A330s.
They are:
-First Class,
-"Revised Economy" (I guess like premium economy on VS ie. in between economy & 1st)
-Economy Class.

What configuration do you think the seats will be in?

maybe one day BD A3xx`s will be flying to asia, that would be cool, or even 340`s. but i think that in the next few years a series of mega mergers will take place and smaller airlines will be absorbed into the giants, thats a pity but its inevitable.
but i agree with you, look at continental a few dc10`s and 757`s, now they`ve got the 777 other airlines are really starting to take notice. but hey airbus are cheap, that why all the cheapy charter airlines have them!!!!(cue airbus fans complaining!)
i notice from your vitals that you want to be a flight attendant, i thought about working in the industry for a while, ground management or something like that, but i found out that the money was around 15k a year, thats not bad but i`m greedy and want more! thats still pretty cool though.

The jist of the article is that, for now, Lufthansa have persuded BD NOT to drop a name with British in the title.
They've done this as they feel "British" implies quality (and when it comes to our scheduled airlines I think that's true).

BDs new slogan thing is "Flying Further".
What do you mean NICE and American???!!! (My appologies to the entire population of the United States!)

At school, close to LHR, we had loads of talks from BA. Their basic sallery per annum is £8,000! (although you can double that as you're also paid for hours flying).
So in the future I may be poor, but hopefully I'll have the job I've always wanted.

Right, I'm off to bed now (I've got a bloody French oral test in the morning, that I'll be failing miserably!).

I read somewhere (either here or on their website) that in the next couple of years BD may order around 8 more A330s.
Do you think this will happen and if it doesn't do you think it will be because they place orders for other a/c types?

Best of luck to BD and DONT drop the name. I use them whenever I can ex EDI and they are superb. I'd love to see them operate Transatlantic routes ex EDI and/or GLA as well as MAN and EMA and the A330 is just the aircraft to use. Maybe they could reinstate the Glasgow-Washington route vacated by United a few years back and offer a code share. With their extensive UK domestic route network, they could feed traffic through any one of three or four long haul (and uncrowded) gateways, whilst Air London are now effectively concentrating on just one, choked up, capacity constrained (but spotter-orgasmic) gateway LHR

For starters, Northwest are no longer offering a daily Boston ex GLA. There is a view that United knew that the IAD flight wouldn't work (having had their own GLA-ORD proposals usurped by AA) and all they were interested in doing was undercutting the opposition and splitting what was then a relatively small and seasonal market. Since that time there has been considerable growth in transatlantic traffic ex Glasgow and Scotland in general (ten years ago, who would have thought that Aberdeen could support a YYZ flight in summer), most of it interlining via LHR or AMS and any airline which can offer the right aircraft size & configuration and isn't so dependant on filling the front as United were will probably be able to make a good fist of it. Especially if its a British carrier with good feeds.
