Have been reading on other sites that EI will shortly announce they will open a new base in BFS...10 routes incl BFS/LHR
...3-4 A320s ...fm W07.

Anyone else heard anything on this ?

Interested on BFS/LHR especially as to where the LHR slots wud come from.

EI have c 22 deps/arrs daily at LHR fm ORK/DUB/SNN....are they going to cutback here to fund BFS.
Have read on other thyreads that US carriers are willing to pay big bucks for slots at LHR given Open Skies and EI
is potentially a big source for these ...but presumably they can-t open BFS and trade slots without
big cutbacks on their existing servives fm LHR.

Or is Willy Walsh with his EI background going to support a BFS/LHR for feed ?

Would be good to see some competition on the Heathrow – Belfast route. However I will believe it when I see it.

Something may be announced tomorrow (6 June '07), if an interview with Enda Corneille earlier today (reported via PPrune) is to believed. There has been plenty of chatter about a base at BFS, most interestingly suggesting that all non-stop trans-Atlantic EI flights will go straight to DUB, with BFS picking up those that go via SNN.

Also some occasional chatter (perhaps wishful thinking... who knows) that BD are considering dual operations to BHD and BFS so as to ensure earlier/later arrivals (BHD not being cleared for 24hr ops).

All most definitely rumours for now...

Only rumours so far but back in October EI was said to be interested in flying LHR-BFS then Aer Lingus announced plans to have base in Europe. BFS was rumoured up until recently when MAN and BHX were said to be the favorites for the new base.

Aer Lingus have tried to run a JFK-SNN-BFS service before and now that CO fly EWR-BFS I don’t think EI will come back with transatlantic services.

As for a Heathrow – Belfast services- BA could not make this work when the only competition was British Midland. Now we not only have BMI flying to Heathrow but there are Easyjet services to Belfast from Luton, Gatwick and Stansted. As well as Fly BE from Gatwick. Not sure there is room for much more.

(When BMI started to operate LHR-BHD they had a period of a bout 6 months when they also flew LHR-BFS.).

Im sure BHX would be a better choice (not simply as im from BHX area).. but there is quite a void for Birminghams euro network.. assuming the new base would be for euro flights.. I was trying to find seats to from BHX to MAD today and I didnt realise we had nothing direct ... or anything that connects that gets into MAD for before noon !!!!
im sure if EI were to pick up BHX as a base they would do well on some euro city routes..

just my 2cents by the way..

I think the plan is an initial short haul focus with long haul a possibility later on. For now EI is focusing on new long haul opportunities out of Ireland (understandly as it is their home, and core, market)

Not from BFS. DUB is about 100miles from Belfast, and the road/rail network is greatly imrpoved and thus accessible by many more people in a more acceptable timeframe. Expnasion at BFS would seriously dilute DUB passenger numbers and yields. The increasing number of people deliberately avoiding the only other connection opportunity from Belfast, (ie LHR) continues to grow. FlyBE (or FlyMAYBE as they are becoming better known) are struggling with cancellations and delays and are becoming unreliable. (From my own and my industry experience)

Slightly off topic, but I think BFS will develop, but through CO's Skyteam partners. CDG, AMS, and other destinations within the UK and Ireland are possible, most likely in partnership with WX. (as seen at LCY)
