FlyBE Admits Staffing Problems

A recent report on the local news station has stated that BE are having problems crewing their aircraft. Delays and cancellations over the past few weeks have been substantial, with 4% of Jersey's services being cancelled over the past month.

They've never been known as the most punctual airline around these parts, but how long do we think it'll take until things get back to 'normal'?

Since FlyBe took BAConnect over, things started to deteriorate with cancellations here and there and a lot of delays. A lot of passengers who booked their flights with BA and then found themselves on FlyBe had to pay for extras like pre seating and they did not like it.

Give it some time and things will iron out.. honestly..
Flybe has just taken a heck of a lot of new routes on and the whole BACON thing was no small deal.. give them a bit of time and some more acft and im sure they'll get back on top...
I remember when Flybe (British European and before that Jersey European) only had one international route and that was to CDG on behalf of AF, they operated it with a CRJ, that wasnt that long ago... now look at what they have !! haha  Smile

I work on behalf of flybe at one of their airports ( I wont say which one!!!) but yes recently there have been major problems. This is down to a lack of emb 145 crew and repositioning over the network to cover shortages. it seems some ex ba staff are not happy wit the flybe deal they get and so have moved on, leaving the airline in real difficulties. the main problems are from ex BACON bases, MAN BHX EDI GLA SOU, whereas EXT NWI and BHD seem to be running relatively smoothly. Unfortunately canx flites, combinations and delays are common, infact a few every day! But the airline is trying to minimise disruption as much as possible. I've also noticed some ex BACON routes are performing very badly compared to original flybe routes. Hopefully, with more flybe marketing these numbers will improve.T he thing is PAX are not going to put up with this for much longer, as they havent paid LCC fares such as £0.01, many have paid hundreads for economy plus and flexiable tickets, however in a lot of cases there is no other alternative!!

This is true and is definitely a very big problem for them. A very good friend of mine is currently on the Dash8-300 for another regional airline and has applied to fly the Q400, he applied around three months ago and has been told that they've had over 400 applicants for both direct entry captains and first officers and only a VERY small team processing all the applications, they've told him to not expect a response until July. They also have to try and resolve the issues they've got with the BACON pilots who are not happy with the conditions of their new contracts, the aircraft they'll be flying etc. Secondly they trained up a large number of 146 pilots to fly the 195 but when there was an issue with delivery they had to continue using the 146 but didn't have the pilots to fly the aircraft so had to cancel numerous flights etc.

They will eventually sort out their issues but I feel that it will be quite a while before we see things back to normal for BE

BE at MAN are experiencing real isues, and are well and truly pissing off the local business community. Only earlier this week a Brussels flight was delayed by over 4 hours, Dusseldorf often goes late and countless other services have been cancelled, amalgamted with later departures or the passenhers just left milling around the departure lounge looking at tv's showing next information messages.

They can turn the corner, but they need to do it very quickly.

Surely if they can't deliver the services then they should cut a handful of poorly performing routes in order to make sure that they have the resources to fly the rest of their network reliably. Offering a service that is regularly cancelled or heavily disrupted is worse than not offering the service at all. For example MAN-NWI is two hours late today, an hour late yesterday and was actually five hours late on one recent occasion (you can drive quicker than that!).

All regional airlines suffer crewing shortages - it comes with the territory as younger pilots in particular want to move onto shiny jets as quickly as they can. Did BE think they would be immune? Get real, and stop trying to expand when you can't deliver - or it will surely cost you dearly in the long run.

I agree, for example, does MAN really need services to EGC and BES? These aircraft, in my view, should be pout to better use on shoring up the forner BA business routes that are suffering.

Lately it has come to my attention that many airlines are suffering from a shortage of employees (FAs,pilots,etc). Airlines such as Easyjet, Ryanair and now Flybe continuosly see the need to train new people, not just to cope with their expasion, but also to keep their existing planes flying!!!

I do apologise but I realise made a slight error with my original post. They don't have one based at Glasgow, it's at Southampton instead

Southampton is correct. EMB is used from SOU to Spanish routes mainly, however Scotland routes, too!

I take it that Flybe haven't improved then - I worked for them as Jersey European from 92-93 as a Purser @ LGW, just as they got their first 146s. A total of 22 cabin crew were based there, most for the full 18 month duration of the base. After 5 months management actually decided to base an aircraft there, but only for 3 months, after which they reversed their decision! From the start we were all wondering when we would get our redundancy letters from the inept Head of Personnel who was based in EXT & like many staff at HQ was virtually unaware of the LGW base. The cabin crew base was finally closed after 18 months, only to be reopened about 2 years later & re closed after another year. Had a great 18 months but still have little confidence in those in charge.
