What's The Partnership Between NW And KL?

I'm aware that they're both in the Sky Team Alliance but how come Northwest Airlines and KLM would appear to be so closely linked? Links to each others website on their own sites, share similar business class products with information on each others products on their own sites etc.

I know that a huge number of airlines have codeshare agreements but I'm not aware of any like this. I've not seen links like this between QF and BA, same goes for VS, DL, CO, the list goes on...

I don't know exactly what thier codesharing terms are now but in the past NW and KLM had a very strong allince. They even painted one of thier planes half KLM, half NW:

They're actually in a joint venture, which is a step beyond a code-sharing alliance...

NW and KLM share all revenue on their trans Atlantic flights. NW can book tickets on KLM and metal and KLM can do the same for NW. NW will use their metal for flights that are usually flown by KLM like EWR-AMS and this summers IAD-AMS which are both usually served by KLM. They were the first real alliance.

IIRC KLM and NWA basically invented code-sharing in the late 80s/early 90s. Moreover KLM bough a considerable part of NW shares that time, and have had a very close partnership ever since.

KL and NW tried to form their own alliance "Wings" in the 90s, but this was merged with skyteam after KLM and Air France started their own affair.

KL operates as a separate airline under the AF ownership. The joint venture with NW is still in effect and doing well.

Other special features of the NW-KL relationship include:

- ground handling integration: KL pretty much has no employees in the US for example; all KL flights are handled by NW check-in and gate agents; reservations on KL flights made in the US are done through NW reservations. Similarly, KL handles all ground ops of NW in Europe even when NW metal is used to that station. NW reservations numbers in Europe all direct you to KL..

- FF program: it used to be (before AF-KL) that KL and NW shared the FF program responsibility according to regions; if you lived in the US, you couldn't join the KL Flying Dutchman program; if you lived in Europe, you could not join NW WorldPerks...

Both those features are/were pretty unique as far as airline relationships are concerned...for example, with ground handling in the case of AF-DL (which don't have as close a relationship as NW-KL), even though DL handles AF in ATL, AF still has a few agents, etc., to represent AF; similarly, even though AF handles DL at CDG, DL still has its own ticketing desk staff and agents at CDG...
