Following the crash of JFK Jr.'s Piper Saratoga, I was wondering if I, an everday citizen, would have crashed my plane into the ocean, would the same amount of resources be devoted to finding me and my plane?

Another thing i cant stand is now news programs are raising the question of general aviation aircraft safety. Now just because someone who was famous, and not the most expierenced pilot in the world crashes, these kinds planes safety is questioned? If you look at the statistics general aviation accidents are decreasing percentagewise considering the amount of aircraft flying today. Dont get me wrong this accident was a tragedy and the Kennedy family has been through a lot in the past. All three people lost on this aircraft will be greatly missed.

Paul I will address you comment first. Yes that is life. But in most places it is not blown out of proporsion as done in the US on a daily basis.
Also the thing you might get is about 1 helicopter 2 CAP and a couple of boats.

I have asked this of myself many time... I guess if I want to be found if I ever crash, I need to become somebody famous, like a movie star. I can see it now "Top Gun 2 - The Chris Barrow adventure"

They first thing that I noticed was that the Coast Guard and the Air Force where really trying to puch the idea that they would do this for any person.

At one by my count (from watching CBS and NBC news) They had at least 20 different aircraft involved. Including a USCG FALCON JET AND C-130 and a ANG C130. Those are pretty expensive assets. I remember the Coast Guard up here threating to sue a couple kids $40,000 a flight hour for the search time a C-130 spent looking for a false Ship ELT that they set off.

I have a friend who is also was in the CAP. He thought it was excessive also.

I can picture using the USCG assets in the water areas around the vineyard but 15 CAP planes on the overwater route. Nobody but a defacto celebertiy would get that much attention.

General Aviation is generally used as a kicking ball by the press and the public out there. I have seen where a plane blew a tire on takeoff made the first page of the paper, while a traffice accident that killed three was in the middle of the same paper.

OBAMA-WORST PRESIDENT EVER....Even SKOORB would be better.

Well I'm a private pilot and I did think about the same thing. But I am sure that the most that they would do is to send an airplane from the civil air patrol to go looking for me. But what can we do? I'm still doing and will keep on doing it because I love it regardless of somebody going out to look for me or not.
