Massive Delays/Cancellations?

The bad weather and the "Computer Glitch" seem to be having a negative effect today also.
A lot of flights are either delayed, then delayed even more then canceled or just plain canceled.
Some flights are operating on-time though.

Like for instance my Sister and her husband flew Delta 1652 MCO-CVG last night they arrived somewhat on time but their connecting flight Delta 5399 CVG-MSP which was scheduled to depart at 8:55pm was delayed till 12:35am then delayed even more till 3:25am then DL finally canceled it. Her and her husband ended up sleeping in Terminal B on cots with a bunch of other stranded passengers. (No hotel rooms available) Delta then put them on CVG-GRB-MSP flight but it was overbooked and they volunteered their seats. ($400 each+Food Vouchers) Delta then put them on the nonstop DL5175 CVG-MSP 12:55pm departure..But this flight was canceled..Their adventure continues..

Do you think Delta's lack of mainline aircraft in CVG is making the solution even more difficult?
Delta/other airlines probably are having a hard time finding crew that has had sleep/recommended rest period.

What do you think? Do you have any advice?

P.S - I'm no aviation expert..

Only from the standpoint of less seats......but figure if mainline was more prevalent those seats would already be sold and cancelled flights put more folks into the airport.

Well...Delta is putting them up at the Hilton at the airport for Saturday. And then they're paying for a hotel room Sunday. They have a direct flight to MSP on Monday...And they got two free meal vouchers ($7)..They don't want to sleep in the airport again..And they need sleep..Want to get out of the airport.

Although the computer malfunctions were fixed shortly before 11 a.m. Friday, their impact lingered on into the late afternoon, especially in New York, where computer systems took two extra hours to connect with the central system in Atlanta, the FAA said. Spitaliere said the flight delays in the rest of the country were not as severe.

I was in Santiago de Chile Thursday night when I received an automated e-mail notification my DL SCL-ATL-MEX flight of Friday night was being cancelled. The system rebooked me automatically in Y in AF's SCL-EZE run, connecting on J with DL's EZE-ATL-MEX run. The flight would depart Saturday noon and I would land in MEX 24 hours later....

After much ado, I got a DL rep to book me in J in AM/LA's codeshare nonstop SCL-MEX. And I'm glad this happened, since upon arriving to SCL, all flights to EZE of the day had been delayed due to foul weather and radar problems in EZE; all six or seven flights were still sitting in SCL's tarmacs - including AF's B772.

So instead I boarded the fantastic new Premium Business class of LA's B763ER, and enjoyed the ride tremendously. This J service is far superior to DL's new Business Elite and all other carriers in the routes between North and South America...  thumbsup   thumbsup

It was however, the lasting affects left airports like LGA (undoubtly hit the hardest) and PHL (as well as most of the major NE hubs) with such a backup it lasted into the wee hours of the morning, making todays recovery very difficult. Mostly due to crew rest, and aircraft not being where they were intended to be.

Hopefully since today is a saturday, which is usually a lighter schedule for most cities/airlines, tomorrow will be back to normal.
