Question About DCA Departure Route.

I was at Gravely point just north of DCA earlier this evening. While putting my bike in the back of my car, I noticed a US A319 making a RIGHT turn immediately after taking off from RWY 1. It then continued southeast and I finally lost it in the haze. I thought all departures from RWY 1 had to turn left shortly after takeoff and basically follow the Potomac river during climbout. Is a right turn after takeoff from RWY 1 a normal departure procedure? How often does this occur?

Good question. To my knowledge a right turn would put you right in the middle of the "No Fly Zone". I'll be interested to hear the explanation...

I occasionally see the US shuttles to LGA or BOS using this departure procedure. If you are listening to tower, the flight numbers are in the 2000s and 2100s. At the risk of stating the obvious, the North East departure flight path does not violate P56 because they make an acute right turn and stay South of the 14St bridge , I-395 and I-295 and follow the Anacostia till approximately abeam of RFK stadium, so they are always either South of or East of the prohibited airspace.

Occasionally you will also see approaches come down the Anacostia (there were a few last Thursday during a Nats-Pirates game), but I don't know which direction those landings end up at DCA.

I just noticed you said the aircraft went southeast after making the right turn (instead of northeast, which is what I assumed you meant). Since I personally have never seen this happen - right turn and then southeast - I too would think this was an unusual departure.

I was in an Air Wisconsin Jumpseat in DCA one day and the flight before us departing Runway 1 was an American 737 (I think, might have been an MD-80 can't really remeber), and it turned southeast to a 140 heading after takeoff from runway 1. Given the AA destinations out of DCA, this flight was likely a MIA flight (Which would have made the AA plane a 737 for obvious reasons)

The strange thing about DCA is that there is no published departure routes or SID's at all at the airport (I believe DCA is the busiest airport in the country without a SID). A Clearance will just remind you to steer clear of P56. Usually on a VFR day, the planes will remain over the river for a bit (In addition to P56, there is a noise abatment policy with regards to office buildings near the pentagon), or on an IFR day they will intercept what I believe is the 328 radial of the DCA VOR. For a
few departures they may just turn them southeast. I believe there is one departure fix to the southeast that I could see such a procedure being used for. But I am not sure how often this procedure is used.

Apodino is correct. The normal departure off RWY 1 in DCA is to avoid P-56 and perform the Noise Abatement procedure. The P-56 does not actually start until about a mile north of the airport. We climb to a few hundred feet and then fly along the river, try to avoid Rosslyn and intercept the DCA radial 328 up the river.

The aircraft that turn right immediately are cleared to do so but have to request the procedure when taxiing out. ATC then makes sure that that area will be clear by contacting Potomac Approach and the aircraft is given the turn procedure on the take-off clearance.

I have done it once.

On my last US Airways shuttle flight from DCA to LGA we used the Anacostia departure. The captain informed us to expect the sharp right on departure and this was "special" since it is rarely granted. It was a nighttime departure and I was on the left side of the aircraft so I got a great view of the District.
