Anyone from the ORD area knows that FX has its air terminal on the south side of the airport. However, the sorting facility is several miles away in Hillside (though it's mostly a straight shot down Mannheim Road.)
Anyone know why FX has their facility divided like this? It seems contrary to their M.O., since they need an extra shipping step as a result.

Probably less expensive land off the airport. Also, I don't know the details of the FedEx Ground network but I did track a recent FedEx "express" shipment that didn't travel via air but did go through a suburban FedEx facility. I guess it makes sense for sorting to be done off the airport if there are facilities to do it and it ends of being more cost effective.

FedEx Express and FedEx Ground are TWO totally different operating companies, and for the most part, if not always; Express boxes go on Express vehicles and Ground boxes on Ground vehicles. My understanding . . . much of an inbound FX aircraft's freight has indeed been sorted down to the respective stations, where once at the station, they sort it down to the individual courier trucks/vans.
