I was just browsing jetBlue's website and came across this:
http://www.jetblue.com/about/jfk/t6.html

It says:
During the late 1990's, TWA leased part of the terminal to United Airlines, who used it for their flights to Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego.

I remember LAX and SFO flights being from T6, but were SAN flights also from there?!

I don't see why they wouldn't have been...

I'm sure they combined all of their California services into Terminal 6 when they leased part of it.

If UA ever flew JFK-SAN it was very temporary and I have no idea where it would have departed at JFK. I do remember a short period of time when UA went kinda crazy with SAN schedules and had n/s to EWR, BOS and a BUNCH to IAD but I seriously do not remember a JFK flight in the 90s. That route has always more-or-less "belonged" to AA (until lately of course...)

I just tried to find either a UA schedule or SAN Airport Flight Schedule (Port Log) from the late 90s and, of course, I couldn't. Sorry.

When the BTS website comes back up, we should be able to find an answer to this service existing.

Why? IIRC, SEA service was with an A320 from Terminal 7, and I doubt UA would have sent 3-class 762s to SAN, though I might be wrong...

If I am not mistaken~

JFK-SEA
2x 757, then A320

JFK-SAN
1x 757, then A320

In the 1990s UAL flew JFK and EWR nonstop to SAN, the EWR-SAN flight was not around long ('94-'95).

I found something finally in my collection of SAN FlightTimes: in 8/97, UA flew SAN-EWR 1x daily (r/t), in 4/98 they flew that plus SAN-BOS, and in 9/98, UA still flew the BOS n/s but had already dropped EWR. I did check my FlightTimes all thru the 90s and UA never flew n/s between San Diego and Kennedy!

UA was flying SAN-JFK n/s in the summer of '70; UA and AA both flew n/s to both JFK and IAD prior to them settling on their "comfort" levels: UA to IAD (before it was really a hub) and AA to JFK (also in the pre-hub days.)

BTW, even though you didn't ask RJ', TWA themselves flew SAN-JFK n/s at one point; I confirmed the start date as 5/09/87 (per the May SAN FlightTimes) and it's gone in the 12/89 issue. (I don't remember it op'ing more than a year or so.) That was really the first serious competition to AA's hold on the market. (TW was a logical choice for the route due to their int'l hub at JFK; I personally flew several times on TW to Europe from SAN via JFK. When the n/s didn't operate, there was always a 1-stop/direct via STL.)

Hope that solves it for you.

Did UA ever fly JFK-LAX with the 747?

Not sure about JFK, however UA certainly operated B747s along with DC-10s LAX-EWR.

UA did fly 747's on LAX-JFK-LAX. They went head-to-head with both AA and TW and their JFK-LAX-JFK 747 routes. And they also competed on ORD-LAX as well along with CO, but that was in the 70's and those were phased into DC-10's and L10's. First, they all had lounges in both classes and were phased out by the early 70's.
