AF/KLM In Talks To Buy VLM - Telegraaf Reports

De Telegraaf reports that AF/KLM is in talks to buy Belgium registered VLM airlines citing unidentified people at both companies.

If the take-over were to go ahead, VLM would be integrated into KLMs Cityhopper or AF's Regional Units to create Europe's biggest Regional airline according to the paper.

It would be a shame if VLM was swallowed up, as they are a very nice airline.

Yes, but good business sense, esp.with VLM's strong links to LCY.

That widens up a connections market LCY-AMS, LCY-CDG, etc, as well as LPL and Isle of Man, Jersey, MAN, esp for long haul.

Those pax may find it easier at the moment to either travel to LHR (for the LCY bases pax), MAN (for the LPL based pax) or connect at LHR for the Isle of Man/Jersey pax; onto BA/BD flights.

SkyTeam benefits too.

It was rumoured in March when BA set up CityFlyer at LCY, that BA were looking to buy VLM because of its strength at LCY, in terms of slots. Let's see what happens

How big would KLM Cityhopper or AF Regional become with VLM? And do they really become the biggest regional airline in Europe then? Bigger than e.g. LH Regional?

Or Flybe, which after the acquisition of BA Connect, is the largest regional airline in Europe

Keep in mind the writer of the article is Arnold Burlage, who is, even for 'de Telegraaf', a bit over the top with his articles

The actual talks are denied, but no one denies that VLM was approached by AF-KLM.
It also states that VLM itself is also looking at possible partners/mergers
Anyhow, I hope the VLM brand stays, it a great company

This would give KLM/AF complete monopoly on LCY - Holland routes.

I'm not sure that would be a good thing, especially as I dont see BA stepping in to fill this, nor will bmi or any other UK regional, maybe flyBE ? but they've not got the best reputations' so far.

VLM's F50s are always in excellant top condition, KLM's are magneticially opposite.. when the door is opened.. it falls out.

However the thought of finally earning some airmiles (that are worth having) from LCY to MAN has it's appeals.

HOw does driving to car from liverpool to MAN to fly to LCY and onwards to CDG open a connections market ?

Personally I think VLM has the right model...

it's everywhere to LCY. Although they offer connectoins, I doubt anyone uses them for a connecting flight. LCY is all about somewhere to city traffic. LCY will never make a connecting airport, but thats the reason for it's success... LHR's future is solely connecting traffic or long haul.

So far in 2008 45 flights and Gold already. JFK, IAD, LGA, SIN, HKG, NRT, AKL, PPT, LAX still to book ! Home Airport LCY

KLM don't fly LPL-AMS.

If someone wants to specifically fly from LPL they can then do LPL-LCY-AMS and onwards.

If they are ok to drive/train to MAN, they can still get on KLM MAN-AMS.

Either way, they get on AF/KLM. Makes sense to me at least.

Would it necessarily mean that the VLM name would die? Remember, Cityhopper and AF feeder companies like Brit Air and Regional (even Cityjet, while we're at it) still operate under their own name, albeit in AF colours?

VG has been looking to expand - there was talk about Embraer 170s (no doubt with LCY in mind), so that might be a motivation; a joint order from Cityhopper/CVLM and one or two AF partner airlines might provide some very good deals on Embraers (or indeed, another commuter type).

As a Jersey resident, I think it's a positive step if it allows VG to feed into AF/KL's networks at AMS. I see that there will be a monopoly for VG/KL on AMS-LCY, but surely that is surmountable.

It'll be very interesting to see how this pans out.

Or just fly Easyjet direct.
