Yemenia A350 Order In Paris?

Maybe they will lease them from Alafco, they just confirmed their order in Paris...

In March 2006, Yemenia announced the intention to purchase 6 + 4 A350 for delivery start in 2012.

Interesting, nobody heard of that before. They never signed a firm order for the old A350, and they only wanted six of them. Maybe Airbus forgot to announce it.  Wink

Anyway, I believe this report is wrong. Yemenia will probably firm it up sooner or later, but they haven't done it yet.

I beleive IY made their intentions for the 350 clear a while back, even before the XWB tangent. What is not clear is if they are being purchased or leased.

"Yemenia-Yemen Airways, based in Sanaa, has selected the Airbus A350 for its long haul fleet modernization programme and has signed a preliminary agreement with Airbus for the acquisition of six aircraft of the type, with options for another four. The selection of the A350-800 by the airline followed a thorough evaluation of the aircraft type and its competitor.

Deliveries of the A350s for Yemenia will start in 2012, and the aircraft will be configured in a comfortable two-class configuration with seating for 18 passengers in First Class and 265 in Economy. The engine type for Yemenia's A350s has still to be selected.

Captain Abdulkhalek Al-Kadi, Chairman of Yemenia-Yemen Airways said: "we are delighted to have secured the future of our long-range fleet with the Airbus A350 in the next decade. We are looking forward to introducing the aircraft type on the intercontinental routes to and from Yemen Yemen Airways is on the right track implementing it's fleet modernization program, and is preparing for growth. Recent business trends are remarkably well. Yemenia is expecting a double digit growth annually, this is why there is a need to focus on Human Resources Training, Automation and Networking."

Gustav Humbert, Airbus President and CEO said: "We are proud to start another chapter in the long and fruitful cooperation with Yemenia Yemen Airways. The new A350s are the perfect tools for the airline to further develop its services from Yemen to Europe and Asia. Yemenia's decision for the A350 is also another endorsement of Airbus' new 250 - 300 seat aircraft programme and confirms its success with customers".

Yemenia's decision brings the total number of orders and commitments for the new A350 to 182 from 14 customers.

Yemenia currently has three B737-800, four A310s and two A330-200s in its long haul fleet, operating from its base in Sanaa and Aden to destinations in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, as well as possible further expansions of the network in Africa in the future.

The A350-800/900 complements the existing A330/A340 Airbus long-range family while capitalising on A380 state-of-the-art technology. New generation engines, new wings and a lighter structure thanks to the use of 60 per cent advanced materials, assure some 12 per cent lower fuel consumption. Passengers will be able to enjoy the large space offered in a new generation cabin, which will also include latest features of lighting.

A leading aircraft manufacturer with the most modern and comprehensive product line on the market, Airbus is a global company with design and manufacturing facilities in France, Germany, the UK, and Spain as well as subsidiaries in the U.S., China and Japan. 90% e-ticketing is laughable. Anyone who has been to Yemen will tell you that internet penetration is far far too low to allow the e-ticketing numbers to reach that high. That is unles conventional ticketing agents are buying and issuing e-tickets.

GECAS, Yemenia and Bangkok Airways have made commitments for previous A350 versions, but never firmed those up. IIRC, China commited to the A350XWB and TAP, TAM, Air Europa and ILFC made firm orders for previous A350 versions and still have to firm those up. But there have indeed been no cancellations, no matter how you look at it.

I don't know how long it has been since you flew IY but they are doing very well. They have carved out some nice little markets for themselves with some shrewd thinking. For instance:
-IY is very popular amongst east Africans travelling to and from France the same goes for the Comoros.
-IY hauls has significant cargo between the GCC and SA via SAH.
-A lot of domestic workers from South East Asia fly with IY because of smart contracts signed with companies that source the labor.

These are just some of the factors. Using tie ins and codeshares with other carriers they are doing well. So there is definitely scope for them to use the new metal. Especially when you consider EIS is a while away not tomorrow.
Additonally by the time these birds come into play IY will likely have let go of the three leased 310s it has allowing for a shuffle of aircraft.

IY is funded by Saudi Investors and the governement of Yemen.

As for Yemen being one of the poorest countries in the world, well it's not. It's somewhere near the middle of the pack. Besides as I already eluded to a good chunk of their business is not O&D ex Yemen. If they can find a way to modernize SAH that would help a lot.

I flew IY in 2004. The service was good, quality of aircraft was good, though SAH is pretty dreadful. While I agree with your three main bullet points above about IY's niches, these are pretty small niches.

To address your points:
-While I don't have any numbers, East Africans traveling to/from France just can't be that many pax. And certainly not high-yielding ones.
-For cargo b/w GCC and SA, what could IY offer that EK, EY, QR, and SAA Cargo don't?
-I don't know how profitable these contracts are, but contract dependency is not healthy for an airline. Contracts can easily be outbid, and IY has innumerable GCC competitors

Capacity for one, there is huge demand so any way is a good way.

While that may be true in western context business in the middle east is not quite the same. It's more of a mafia mentality, looking after each other and everyone gets a taste of the profits. As I mentioned the Saudis are heavily involved with IY so there are a lot of connections to milk.

I think you've successfully argued against your initial argument  Smile GDP and airline viability are not driectly related. If they were Luxembourg should be through the roof.

Either way the 350s will be a nice site in SAH.
