At What Point Is United Going To Cancel This One?

Ok, so here is the issue. My girlfriend is sitting on United 1148, that was supposed to go from ORD to BUF at 1941 CDT and still hasn't left for various reasons. Meanwhile, they couldn't find one of the pilots rostered for the flight, they taxied out over an hour ago, had the AC packs go out, went back to the gate to get that fixed, had to load extra fuel for a low and slow flight, and have now had the F/As time out. They apparently have found 2 reserves but with another flight (UA254) sitting around waiting to ply the same route, you have to wonder how many people they have with duty time left over to go around. Mind you, this is after her DEN-ORD (itinerary was BUR-DEN-ORD-BUF) had to divert to RFD, had a mechanical there, and finally got into ORD only to see her miss one flight and now have this happen.

At what point does United just cancel this one and eat the hotel costs?

To paraphrase Yoda, do or do not, there is no hotel.

Sorry to hear about your girlfriend, but even with increased media coverage of people being left to rot on the tarmac, airlines continue to do it. It's like they're asking Congress to regulate them.

www.flytecomm.com is still showing a sheduled departure of 1:36am, although UA.com still hasn't been updated to reflect that. It is my experience that www.flytecomm.com is better than UA.com at posting proposed schedule changes on time.

If you girlfriend started her trip in chicago, its unfortunate she has to put up with ORD and UA. If she is connecting, I can only say I hope she, in the future, chooses to connect in a hub that isn't as delay prone as ORD is.

At Thanksgiving I has an AS flight out of San Jose that was sched for a 5:15pm departure. The plane went mech in Seattle (the inbound flight) for 2 hours then an ice/snow storm hit which really started backing things up. Crew timed out, etc. We very much expected AS to just cancel (heck.. it was midnight and there weren't many passengers left waiting around.)... I was very surprised when they promised that they wouldn't cancel the flight... they were going to get us home. And that they did.. at 3:30am we had a plane and a crew and they flew about 30 people home to Seattle... they even paid the curfew fines for SJC. So in that case... i am glad they didn't cancel. We landed at 5:30a and got to the house around 7am. Around noon Seattle got hit with a huge snow/ice storm that shut everything down for days.... i was VERY thankful that AS found a way to get us home before the storm hit.

Quoting Longhaulheavy (Reply 1):
there is no hotel.

It is a mechanical and a crew issue, no longer weather related, so there should be if there is a final cancellation.

The thing about that is, we both try and stick with Star Alliance carriers as we both have a lot of miles with member airlines. Not only that, but out of Buffalo (she is from Southwestern Ontario), you are confined to IAD or ORD on United, and IAD is backtracking. In any case, whether or not she is flying through ORD, the airline is completely responsible for mechanical and crew delays.

Took off at 1:17, although I'm sure you already knew that.

As for my statment before, I was unaware that it was a mechanical problem (which could happen anywhere any time).

Its unfortunate that the only midwest connecting hub *A has to offer in the midwest is ORD. MSP, DTW, and CVG all run much more efficiently.
