just received this from my BA contact at my company...
Dear All
Hatton cross has been closed following an incident involving a gas leak at the Jury's Inn.
Initially the perimeter road alone was closed but as of a few moments ago the whole of Hatton cross was closed although some traffic is being allowed to leave the base area by the police, but this is changing by the minute, all traffic and all pedestrians will need to leave via E11 for the present.
All roads surrounding Hatton cross have been closed and this will have a knock on effect on traffic in the area.
BA have now advised that Heathrow Airport has been closed.

Current situation -
A30 closed from The Parkway (A312) to the Clockhouse Roundabout. Traffic is heavy and slow-moving on the A4 approaching Henleys roundabout and also on the A315 Staines Road.
Tube - Hatton Cross station is closed. Terminal 4 station is also closed, but this is due to earlier signal failure.
Heathrow T1-2-3 is open.
Staff car-parks - Southside and Eastside currently closed. Westbase also closed.
Cause of all this - a mechanical digger ruptured a gas main pipe at the construction site adjacent to the Jurys' Inn hotel.
Diversions included the BA082 from Abuja, which went to CWL and is due back at LHR at 1818LCL. TAM's flight JJ8084 from GRU diverted to CDG, and is due at LHR at 1930LCL.
Other european flights went to STN, LTN and LGW, amongst others.

The bit of road that was closed, is the route I get home by, via a 5 min or so bus journey.
So I accepted a lift from a colleague, we went around the peri track, via T4, cargo, T5, with no traffic (unlike the poor sods on the A30), finally getting back on track on the Bath Road.
Building work near the Jury's Inn hotel, maybe they hit a gas main?

What a fun day.
Was down in LHR for work, tours of T1/T4 and waterside. Kinda got stuck on the BA bus to T4, and then went to T1 on the train. Our flight, the 445 was canx, then the one after, passengers EVERYWHERE, no chance of getting a flt, so made our way to london, paddington, then tube, to euston, then Virgin Trains to manchester

Makes me kinda glad i dont work there anymore!!
I had to make a rather hard choice
on one hand
shit hours sometimes with less than 10 hrs between shifts (which i believe is illegal!!!)
1 hour travelling each way
one weekend in 6 off
15,999 pa pay
and cheap flights with lots of restrictions
22 days hols
OR
mo-fri 9-5.30
EVERY weekend free
10 mins from home
24 days hols
great perks ie £50.00 vouchers for a team competion
£200 per quarter for team parties
Free or cheap summer balls at top class locations
10% bonus for reaching target
15% of a new Saab or Vauxhall with 0% finance
pay of 16,250 for starters
Is this a no brainer?
Tell me i did right leaving BA
Oh i did like the job, but the petty restrictions got on my tits
So much PC it hurt
look at the gap between day 3 and day 4... insert a minimum of 90 mins travelling and that leaves me with a max of 6 hrs sleep
thats why i said stuff it, and the more i heard about the resrictions on the 'cheap' flights, it appears shit is transported better than you..Loved the job best i've had, but i dont like being made a mug of, on those timings
BA must be 'aving a larf''

Silverfox, its 24 HOURS
Cover is needed at all times, hence the times. In one job i used to do i did 11 till 6am, 6am till 2 pm 2 till 10 etc
Sometimes 12 hour days were needed.
They need to stagger shift patterns as well.
No point complaing when you know the cover is needed at all times

It is a no-brainer.......that your current pay and conditions bear no relevance to the subject of a "Gas Leak at LHR Right Now".....!

Also IB 4188 from BCN was diverted to ORY then finally arrived at LHR 19.30. 21 JJ pax misconnected to our flight (NH202). Also, one BD flight (not sure if it was 59 from MAN or 589 from EDI) was diverted to LTN, although the pax still made our flight, how i had no idea..
Because of the diverts and subsequent delays, 35 pax in total misconnected yesterday! Transfer area in T3 was a mess!!!

I too work at a major port in the UK, which includes working any shift in a 24 hour period over 7 days. But still we abide by the Working Time Regulations which basically means an 11 hour break between shifts. IIRC this should apply to all EU member states. I have copied the main points from the DTI website, with a link to the site below.
The basic rights and protections that the Regulations provide are:
a limit of an average of 48 hours a week which a worker can be required to work (though workers can choose to work more if they want to).
a limit of an average of 8 hours work in 24 which nightworkers can be required to work.
a right for night workers to receive free health assessments.
a right to 11 hours rest a day.
a right to a day off each week.
a right to an in-work rest break if the working day is longer than 6 hours.
a right to 4 weeks paid leave per year.

The VS fllights inbound from PVG, NRT and NBO all went into LGW for about an hr before heading up to LHR. Was this the first time a 340-600 was in LGW??

The BA flight from Rome was diverted to Kent International (Manston) for refuelling and an hour's wait until the go-ahead to fly to LHR.
With the 3 engineless aircraft parked there ( 2 747 and 1 DC8 Freighters) was rather interesting but not quite the Californian desert.
