I read an article about significant number of immigrants from Norway who settled in Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota and Manitoba. And so charter flights are common from all these places into Norway (Oslo? Bergen? any other?). Anybody knows examples of charter flights currently and in the past?-----I need name of the airline, type of aircraft used, routing (include technical stops if any) and frequency of the charter flights. Thanks in advance for the info.

I am not sure there were any to speak of, just because people settled there does not mean they return back home for visits and such.

Not sure about charter flights, but NW (Northwest Orient at the time) did have flights from MSP to OSL (as well as JFK-OSL). Check out their route map from 1986.

Next flights: YQM-YYZ-YOW v.v. / YQM-CUN v.v. / YQM-YUL-YWG v.v. / YSJ-YYZ-SEA-SFO / SFO-YYZ-YOW-YQM / YQM-YYZ-MUC-TXL /

There are over 5 million Americans with a blood line to Norway  Smile That's more than there are Norwegians in Norway  Smile

Have'nt heard of any charters from the US to Norway. May very well be though...............

The only US airline that flies regulary flights to Norway is Continental ( B 757 ) Previously it has been Delta, Northwest, Pan Am, but that is a long time ago.

On a side note, here are some Americans of Norwegian desent:

Renee Zellweger, Pricilla Presley, Marily Monroe, Paris Hilton, Liv Tyler, Linda Evans, Lorenzo LAmas, James Cagney, Robert Mitchum, Walter Mondale to name a few.

Other than NW serving OSL back in the 80's, and again on a seasonal basis maybe back in the late 90's, I am unaware of any other carriers serving this particular part of the US market.

Though I have heard of family reunions so big that aircraft has been chartered to fly to Norway from the US just for that purpose. Could not give you any additional detail about these specific flights, aircraft involved, or the time when these took place. Sorry!

I don't think that there are any non-stop flights, chartered og scheduled, between Norway and the Central US.
Several airliners have tried to make a profitable schedule flight between Oslo and the East Coast (NYC), but "none" have succeeded, incl. SAS, Pan Am, Delta and NWA.
Also I have a slight memory of an American carrier doing a chartered flight between Oslo and the East Coast for a brief time, but I can remember the name of it.

It was an article I read in Lonely Planet's NORWAY book that there are certain travel agencies in Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota and Manitoba that arrange charter flights to Norway for Norwegian descendants. I may have to go there to "investigate"------I believe DULUTH, Minnesota has a lot of Norwegian stocks! How about Green Bay, WI? Eau Claire, WI

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/COA38 It's still flying regularly, and there's no word of it being unsuccessful so far.

Northwest tried to do a seasonal MSP-OSL service during the 90's. However the loads on the route was so poor that it was discontinued after only 3 month of operation and never reinstated...

Also, as discussed a number of times here, SK have abandoned EWR and only carrier left is CO - with great success btw.

Most of the Norwegians came over a long time ago. That and family ties to the homeland, especially in that era where calling home was not really an option kind of fell apart. I have no idea who my relatives are over there, as my people came over from Norway like 4 generations ago, like a lot of other folks. Yeah, there may be a lot of people with Scandinavian heritage, but a lot of families came over for good. It seems to me that the number of Norwegians, as a percentage of that nation's population, was the highest percentage of any nation's population to emigrate to the US. Everyone left! The ties to Norway aren't quite like other nationalities. There are many nationalities that got to the states or are still coming to the states in droves and still have family members to communicate with. For example, I meet many people who have heritage of Meditteranean nations (ie. Italy, Greece, Israel, etc.) who may have been born here in the US but speak the language. Everyone from Mexico and other Latin American nations goes home on a regular basis. Every Indian goes home at least every other year. Just try finding someone here who still speaks Norwegian...

And what's the reason for us to go to Norway anyways? Minnesota is already cold, flat and has many farms. The people even speak with an accent anyways!  Wink

I see quite a number of people who fly FI from MSP-KEF-OSL, along with other Scandinavian destinations. Their flights seem to always be full. NW's MSP-OSL service was plagued by the fact that there just isn't a DC-10 full of Minnesotans wanting to go back to the homeland every day of the week or the freight to make it profitable. But a 757 from EWR on CO, to catch everyone else in America going that way? It's a hit!
