Give it some time...DL will come from behind and fix this little glitch.

I don't know about that. DL has already said they intend to continue reducing domestic capacity systemwide, while Airtran will continue to increase domestic capacity. Also, I don't think DL wants to add a lot of capacity to DAY and pull even more traffic away from the hub at CVG. The bottomline is that I don't think DL is willing to put up a huge fight for markets like DAY anymore.

You may have a point though.....my old boss used to always talk about 'big fish", and these little domestic markets aren't the big fish he was talking about.....lucrative routes like TLV and CDG are where the money is....

DL chased market share for way too long - and it cost them plenty. DL's presence in cities throughout the Ohio valley was a byproduct of its presence in CVG - where DL continues to be the dominant airline by a very long shot.

FL has dozens of airplanes to deploy over the next couple years and they will look for opportunities in markets like DAY. But I also remind you that FL's profit margins over the past couple years have not been at levels you would expect from a carrier that is on strong financial footing. Continuing to throw capacity in smaller markets that are already well served doesn't help.

Serving small point to point markets from a small city like DAY doesn't make sense for DL or FL. It is the network carriers that are showing restraint in managing capacity while the LFCs are the ones who could find themselves in trouble during the next downturn - and they don't have a whole lot of older planes they can pull out of service.

I thought FL carried more pax than DL or am I thinking of CAK?

You're probably thinking of CAK. FL has been bigger than DL at CAK for quite some time.

True, but DAY isn't your typical small market due to it's proximity to CVG. Since DL has to keep fares brutally high to keep the CVG hub alive, DAY is going to get a healthy share of that market too. While DAY can't support a full hub, I could see FL building a decent focus city over time.

And this is exactly what FL should be doing here. There are some decent opportunities for service to places like FLL, and new service is scheduled for LAS. Places like BWI, MCO, TPA, ATL too, which FL already flies, are doing very well.
