Airlines In America Are Packing Them In.

Just some information.

This is a chart showing some of the increases in American flying for June of this year.

Note the ASM & traffic growth for Airtran and JetBlue.


NEW YORK, July 9 (Reuters) - The following table lists June
operational data for the 10 largest U.S. airlines by passenger
traffic, compared with the same month a year earlier:

NOTES:
Traffic is measured in billions of revenue passenger miles, the distance traveled by paying passengers.

Capacity is measured in billions of available seat miles, reflecting the seats available for sale and the length of the legs.
Load factor is the percentage of seats occupied by paying
passengers and change is in percentage points.
Figures for Delta, Continental, Northwest and US Airways include data for regional affiliates.
Alaska Airlines doesn't include unit Horizon Air All data are from the airlines.

How are they packing them in? The number of seats is still the same on each aircraft, just more people are flying, or people are being put onto fewer aircraft (but still with the same amount of seats on board). God forbid the airlines try to make a profit. Still more comfortable than easyJet or Ryanair.

The airline business is very seasonal. There are many months where LFs hover in the low 70s or worse. You have to make hay while the sun shines.

Oil prices are up, air fares are up, still people are boarding planes. That's the only point I wanted to make.

Most airlines in North America are getting close to 80-85% L.F. Great news indeed but it's not surprising for this time of the year. It will decline in fall, don't worry!!

I just did a little number crunching and worked up the load factor for us (AirTran) out of ATL Tuesday, July 10:

Total Available Seats = 32,394 (scheduled)
Total Reserved Seats = 28,599 (as of 1700)

Load Factor = 88.3%

Not too shabby for a Tuesday.
